View Full Version : The Food Dilemma
joanne1216 10-23-2011, 09:28 AM In another thread we discussed sugar being a problem for some of us, for others it's salty foods, pizza, wings, etc...
Mine is sweets (as we all know) and this thread is for those who want to cut back on their food "concern" or even cut it out completely.
I am going to begin mine with cutting out white creme doughnuts, Chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cakes, M & M's, reese's cups and ice cream. I list specific sweets because those pose a problem to me. Someone could bring a box of doughnuts to work and if there are no white creme, I won't have any.
Anyway...
I would love to hear your ideas. What foods have been keeping you from obtaining your goals or just make you feel crappy after consuming it?
Scooter 10-23-2011, 11:25 AM On my FB page I posted an article about Glucosimine and MSM from a Doc. He talks about why some people crave sugar. You might have something going on there with Stress, Cortisol or some metabolic system.
Might be a good read for you
Paul@Pittsburgh 10-23-2011, 12:38 PM Bread. My biggest downfall is certainly bread and bread like food.
My dad was a big bread eater but seemed to be able to metabolize it better than me (or ate less of it). But I grew up with sandwiches and butties, even with dinner. I lose weight when I eliminate it, seem to gain it back when I eat it consistently. So, yep, bread is my equivalent of your sweets Jo.

Hey Pauly, so wonderful to see you
I love bread but I don't go out of my way to have it. Although, when I gave up sweets for 40 days, I craved bread and I did go and buy a roll here and there. Still lost 10lbs that month, it still beats having a donut!
I have been doing ok with my sweets.... craved earlier and had a few pieces of dark chocolate covered almonds which seemed to help. I love dark chocolate but that is something I am able to eat in moderation but they are still high in calories.
Work is going to be the real challenge and I'm ready with my apple, banana, carrots, broccoli and nuts.
It's amazing how much better I feel already without all that sugar in me.
So Pauly, do you eat bread everyday? Do you consume large quantities?

I read it, thank you for bringing it to my attention. Sometimes I do believe I have something going on with my system but when I really want to stop something, I have been able to. I have had many addictions in my life that I just gave up because I was tired of it. I have been fortunate to be able to stop an addictive behavior when I felt the need, even sweets. I've done it before and I will do it again.
I have learned a very hard lesson here.
tigerbunny 10-23-2011, 06:55 PM That was an awesome article, Scooter, thanks for that. I do find a Paleo diet makes me feel so much better all over. The first three times, with sugar de-tox, it was horrible. But it's easier now; and it's really easier when I drink all the water and make sure I'm well fed with real, whole foods.
I have a lot of trouble eating & eating properly in the mornings. I take thyroid, and always try to get it in me as soon as my eyes open and I'm sitting up. I can't eat for an hour after I take it. By then, I'm rushing trying to get out the door to work. I have a great paleo-friendly green protein drink recipe, but I don't think I'm going to like that for winter. Leftover dinner makes a great breakfast for me. So much easier to not snack when I'm hungry. Also, to plan a snack. A hard-boiled egg and some celery sticks are a great mid-morning snack. A larabar is a great afternoon snack.
I tend to cook a lot of whatever, and put it in plastic containers to take with for lunches, or to grab a quick dinner when I don't have strength or time to cook. Just add veggies.
Good thread. My specific give up is sugar. I get fruit, and I get sweet potatoes. Nothing with wheat (no baked goods) or other grains.
So far pretty good.
joanne1216 10-25-2011, 04:48 AM Just a few short days without that toxic substance and I feel great :DC:
TB, I just googled Larabar... are they any good?
tigerbunny 10-25-2011, 08:49 AM So glad you're feeling better, Joanne :)
Larabars are so YUMMY! There are several recipes around the net for making them at home. My friend said they had some homemade and they were even better than Larabars.
My favorites are the more tart ones, the sweeter ones are actually too sweet for me. :P Cherry Pie is my most favorite, Key Lime, and Lemon follow. When I do want sweet, I love the coconut (I think it's called Coconut Creme Pie). They're mostly dates, with nuts and other flavors thrown in, I think. I don't care for the Apple Pie, but lots of people love that one. I know one guy who is not allergic to any of the ingredients, but Apple Pie larabar gives him a headache. Blueberry Muffin is also quite delicious.
It's still high dose of food sugar, so I work at only one a day. :) I also try add more nuts if I'm having it for a snack.
Yesterday was tough, I didn't get any good food prepped on Sunday. Last night I made my yummy 'skillet' (kind of like ratatouille with meat, only spiced with cumin) and I have six plastic containers.
