View Full Version : Mind and body
tim_4077 05-26-2006, 01:03 PM Our mind controls our body, obviously. Who out there believes that the opposite is true? That the fitness of the body dicates the fitness of the mind?
It's something i've often wondered about. I've read that if your body is out of nick you can struggle with the spiritual side of life. ie. your body has to be fit to open your mind to these things.
It's all very interesting:) and another damn good reason to get fit and live healthily if there is a strong connection.
Of course, many very unhealthy people have been successful. Many big players in the business world are big in more than one sense of the word. I wonder, if they were in peak condition, could they achieve more? cope with more?
Hmm:)
Thoughts?
Coach Morse 05-26-2006, 01:21 PM I think since the mind is a part of the physiological make up of the body that cognitive ability is directly related to overall physical health; meaning the better shape your body is in, the better shape your mind is in. Good health, however, is no guarantee of intelligence, nor is pure intelligence a guarantee of success.
So, which came first the chicken or the egg? It's kind of like that.

tim_4077 05-27-2006, 01:53 AM Makes sense.
I guess its not so black and white as 'this equals this'...but i guess good physical health contributes to overall wellbeing and ability to concentrate etc etc
Something to think about anyways, i find it interesting

I think about FDR and polio and Stephen Hawkings, and others who were not very healthy. That is an interesting question, and I really do not know the answer. I know for myself, I operate much better if I am feeling good.
Coach Morse 06-05-2006, 11:47 AM I think maintaining balance is the key to long term success.

I found this very interesting so I'm bumping it up.
Thats a very good question Tim. I would think that my mind controls my body although working out and staying in shape makes me feel so much better. I feel more alert and ready to tackle just about anything. When I eat a lot of junk food and slack on working out I feel sluggish and moody.
So I would have to say, how we take care of our bodies will help improve our mind.
MantaRayz 02-04-2007, 08:52 AM So, which came first the chicken or the egg? It's kind of like that. I think Thought came first. Then the nest. then came the road to get to the nest. at that point, it doesn't matter.
Jennihul 02-04-2007, 11:40 AM Consciousness (of which the "mind" is a small part) creates and instructs. The meat suit obeys.
If the meat suit is uncomfortable in any way, the mind can be overwhelmed with the negative sensory data that the body generates to the degree that it can affect the health of the mind and consciousness on a larger scale.
Everything is interconnected. But I believe that consciousness can exist independant of the body so in that respect, if you can control your mind, your unwell body needn't be a detriment to the quality of your mind. Helen Keller, Steven Hawking, Roosevelt, etc.

GR8FL2BME 02-04-2007, 01:52 PM Whenever I see the two words "mind" and "body" together, I find myself thinking the words with Deepak Chopra's voice. He is the one who made clear to me that between "mind" and "body" there is no separation.
Reeveso 02-14-2007, 11:12 PM I think the mind controls the body..every second of everyday and there's no other way around it
For example..if you're having a negative/bad day and don't feel (mentally) like working out - your workout is going to be bad
If you're in a positive mood that day...the workout will be much better
I'd go into this further but I need some sleep lol..g'night!:thumb:
imike 02-16-2007, 02:28 AM 100% agreed! What you say to yourself internally or visually + your body language = your behavior
