View Full Version : the Vibe Book Club

During a recent chat session several of us discussed the idea of a book club here, where everyone reads a particular book and we then schedule chats to discuss that book.

I have never belonged to a book club and so am not sure about the actual mechanics (do you read the whole book, one or two chapters at a time, etc.,), but I like the idea.

The first suggested title was "The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play " by Neil Fiore.

Who would be up for a Vibe Book Club and how should we do it?

I'm ready.

As for acquiring the book - Unless one happens to be lucky enough to already own it - I think we should make a habit of advising Tom which book we will be reading and discussing so that he can open the thread with the book title and cover pic linked to Tom's Amazon affiliate link - just another small way we can contribute to the expense of hosting and running this discussion board.

(Or we can use my affiliate link, if you prefer!!!)

Hi John,

I think a SuccessVibe Book Club is an excellent idea!!

I also like your choice for the first book! Excellent! :thumb:

For myself, I prefer assigned “chapters”…. chapter breakdowns” seems more thorough.

Do you have a start date for people who do not yet own the book?

Not yet GGG.

I like Spider's idea of using his and Tom's affiliate numbers so they get credit, so I think we'll see if other suggestions come up and then put together an approach. I like you chapter breakdown idea to keep the discussion focused.

More ideas?

(Ahem ..... I was making a joke when I suggested my affiliate link -- I think we should use Tom's only.)

Doing a chapter at a time on the fourms sounds good to me. If we want to supplement it with a chat for those that can make it, we can.

One of my goals for the book club is integration. I mean by this, not learning something new from each book in isolation, but building on the learning piece by piece and integrating it in such a way that I can build good habits from it. So maybe a seemigly good suggestion won't fit with what I do know, but something else might. I will be focused not on just reading, but application too.

Do we want to do one chapter a week of a book or more? One a week could be very slow for a fast paced board like this. But more than two a week could be too much for some people too.

I suggest 1-2 per week, but this may depend on the book.

The Now Habit looks really good and could help some of us (ahem), but other ideas (maybe for the future) could include 7 habits, 8th habit, AR's UP and ATGW of course, Power of Full Engagement... I am sure there are many others.... oh Brian Tracy's Focal Point (a great compliment to Time of Your Life).

Do we want to stab at a start date? Two weeks from now? Week beginning Nov 6?

Hello peeps

I'm new to the forum but just wanted to ask if you'd mind anyone joining in? I think a book club is a great idea and will give some of us who have difficulty in maintaining momentum some incentive! :bonk:

Just a thought while I am being cheeky and butting in here  Perhaps 1-2 chapters a week would give people time to think through and focus on the pertinent points so that a more robust discussion can be had? It would give people time to "work on" areas of interest or specific "nuggets" which captivate or intrigue them - that might bring a depth to the discussion too :)

I think chat is impractical since many of us live in different parts of the world.

But a running log/thread once a week is cool. Then you could add when you have time to spare. We could start a different thread for the 1-2 chapters per week to keep the discussions tidy.

I'd definitely be interested KG. Whatever works for you guys, chat may not be the best I agree, specially with some folks logging at work and all........great idea.

But why would you?

I would like to join but it can be a problem for me getting the books.

To integrate what we read is a great idea, Paul!

Im on several book sites and have joined a reading group, but they are novels and we take turn to come up with a title for everyone to read. To read one or two chapters per week sounds like a good idea as these books would be very different from novels.

If its okay, I shall read and join in whenever I can?

I dont think that the odd "fiction" work would hurt.

There is some great stuff around - no Natasha, not Jackie Collins:tiphat:

I'd rather read the classics. Odd fiction doesn't do it for me! Unless it's Stanley Kubrick! :biglaugh:

Well looks like we have enough interest so let's give this a shot.

First book will be "The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play " by Neil Fiore.

We will provide some time to get the book (~2 weeks) and I will ask Tom to put up an affiliate link so he gets some benefit.

Plan will be to read a chapter a week, and to post a thread about the key distinctions\lessons\ideas that you took from that chapter. We can schedule chats for those so inclined as well. I was thinking we name the threads according to chapter, I will post the first one and then we can all piggyback onto that to keep from cluttering up the board too much.

So how about we plan to open with 1st chapter the week of the 13th.

Any ideas\suggestions are welcome as we go forward.

You beat me to it John. Yep, let's aim for the week of Nov 13... maybe 2 chapters that week?

One of us should start a thread about that specific book.

I am so busting out laughing.
This is a thread that is about reading a book about now as a group
The thread is over a year old and its questionable that it ever started.

This is funny, I don't care who you are.

YES!!! A book club would be great to have at successvibe. GREAT IDEA because everyone can talk about what they particularly liked about the books/ articles, what they learned, they're favorite quotes and such.

My only worry is how will we choose the books we should discuss/ talk about? lol
by vote or just post any thread.

P.S. I can see if I can find digital books about success and life coaching, and if there is a way that successvibe that can allow me to upload the books, i dont mind doing it for free... whenever I got time of course lol.

A Book Club struggles to get going. Some folks want to read the book faster than others once they start. The chance of a good number of people wanting to read the book all at the same time is hard to get (with the limited number of active posters here etc).

So my suggestion: if you want to read a book with one or two people and discuss it as you go along... post that you are looking for a book buddy. Say you are going to start reading Book X in a weeks time. Anyone who wants to read the book along with you, sign up and then you can read it together. Others who have read the book already maybe can chime into the discussion too. This seems easier than trying to get a whole group of people coordinated to read a book that maybe some aren't even committed to any way.

Does anyone want to do "Think and Grow Rich"?

Looking at the dates, it IS funny I admit.
I didn't really pay attention to the threads dates and just assumed this was recent.
Either way I STILL think it's a great idea.
Anyone for discussing Think and Grow Rich, I'm definetely down.

Should we start a seperate thread?
