Seems I am always getting stuck in low paying jobs that I don't like and they take up all my time so I can't improve my life. Feels like I will never get out of debt.

View Full Version : This is what always eludes me. danielx 04-04-2004, 02:59 AM Seems I am always getting stuck in low paying jobs that I don't like and they take up all my time so I can't improve my life. These are important first steps to realizing your goals. OneMore 04-04-2004, 01:12 PM A never ending cycle it does sometimes seem we are in, Daniel, but that's where the challenge arises. No matter how much we'd love it to be otherwise, we are allocated only so much time in a day to accomplish that which needs to be done. The trick is in prioritizing and organizing that time a bit better to allow us to make the necessary changes to escape from what must seem like an infinate loop. Experts label it as 'time management'. It's easier said than done. Recognizing that a job does consume much of your day, it does not consume all of it. Though I'm sure your energy level must feel drained by the end of your shift, it can be easily replenished in a wide variety of ways, some of which could be as simple as soaking in a hot bath or indulging in a slight nap. I think the first step to removing ourselves from the circular loop type of thinking which you've managed to relay here quite well, is what I would label as a 'burning desire' to enact some sort of change within our lives. In order to do that we must make time. For most of us, whose schedules are already overcrowded, that means something old must go, in order to make room for the new. We must learn to differentiate between that which is important and that which is not and then act accordingly in a manner conducive to allowing us to achieve our goals. Perhaps, you might start by keeping a journal of your daily activities, things that are consuming your time, to allow you to better perceive where it is being spent. Once that recognition is there, it will be much easier to understand what you can rearrange and what you cannot so that you might better allocate the time given to the accomplishment of the goals you've set for yourself. Antiphrasis 04-04-2004, 02:24 PM What's your education level? If you're not interested in starting your own business, you'll need need at least a college degree to get ahead. Jeremy W. 04-04-2004, 10:45 PM daniel, what do you love? Yes, I'm one of those "do what you love" people, but not really... You might be surprised to find you can do what you love in any job, which will make you succesful. After you figure out what you love, it's really about finding a company which will help you fuel your passion. After all, you don't just want another "job". You want something that'll make you happy! Jeremy, Great point. I want to do something I love too. I'd rather do something I love and be poor than do something that pays really well and be miserable. danielx 04-07-2004, 06:05 AM I forgot about this. I musta been really depressed when I wrote this. :o jlknauff 08-16-2004, 09:59 AM Jeremy, Great point. I want to do something I love too. I musta been really depressed when I wrote this. :o Hey, it happens to everyone at some point ;) I really liked the suggestion above about keeping a daily journal. I took a Challenge back in January which I titled "the 25th Hour". Like you, I was frustrated and having a hard time moving forward - even though I quit my job in '96 and have been running my own biz since then. Sometimes life gets 'stuck' in a phase thats uncomfortable. For me, being a single mother to two children AND taking care of my 92yo Grandmother full-time AND trying to manage a home AND running a full-time business - - - well, I was starting to lose steam. I had Goals and I had Dreams... that were seeming to slip out of my reach. And so I challenged myself (publicly, through Total Life Success) to spend just one hour out of each day (60 minutes - thats all) focusing on MY goals, and on moving forward. As was suggested above, I ended up starting a time log (to try to figure out where in the world every minute of 24 hours was allocated). It was very enlightening! Just by focusing on my Goals alone, I gained SO much momentum. Pure energy, motivated once again! There's power in what Mike Litman says: Focus on the results - not the process. It's been 8 months since that Challenge ended... and I'm still making great strides towards my Goals... and feeling better than ever! |
