View Full Version : Question for you guys regarding reputations

Tom

As it stands, in your user CP, you can see the recent reputations you've been given, but not who gave them to you. Do you want it to remain anonymous, or do you want to be able to see who gave them to you, as well as have those you've given them to be able to see that you are the giver?

Hi Tom,
I got a PM today over in the "alternate universe" from a fellow who I gave some reputation points to. He was thrilled and PM'd me to thank me. Now I have a new friend. I think that's cool. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'd like to see the names. Thanks for asking. One more way you're proving to be the best :curse: site administrator on the planet! :woot:

I would like to see who I get rep points from, be it good or bad. I think the people here are all quite friendly and helpful.... :) :thumb:

PS: I have been leaving remarks for people when I have been giving them good rep points here - plus adding my handle Cat Lover to them so they would know who it was from.... so does that mean that the people I did that for - didn't get those notes??

This reputation thing is fairly new to this site, but I would assume it means less than zero. Or do you mean an individual rating? I would assume that would mean they chose "disapprove."

The gray signifies that it doesn't count, it is neither positive nor negative. Now what causes that, I'm not sure, lol. Perhaps it is because the person used up all their reputation points for the day. The limit is ten, I believe.

I saw your note Cat, so that is a good idea, otherwise I wouldn't have known who gave me some points... yay!!!

Seriously, it's nice to see who gave them and some comments.

I wonder if negative points fits in with the concept of a positive outlooking type of forum... since negative points are most likely to get people all bent out of shape, maybe we should only be able to give positive points when we feel so inclined.

Excellent point Paul. I would never leave a negative point for someone. What's the purpose? If I really didn't want to interact with someone, I would just "block" them in my CP.

I feel the negative point would be okay if it is remains anonymous. I feel it should be anonymous, because why start wars between people?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for asking.

I think people should be accountable for their actions of giving or taking Reps points. Own up to it whether good or bad.

I also agree with Paul....do we really need the Negative Reps points?????

If people get out of control....it's up to you to ban them not us.

From what I have seen elsewhere it's only the mean people who are spiteful use the negative Reps points. The rest of us have no use for them. Why give the spiteful people ammo...already saw it get abuse by one person somewhere else. Out of control that person was. No one could have an opposite opinion...if you did...you would get dinged.

True.....but.....why put anything negative out there if you don't need to? I mean it's one thing to respond to a post with a disagreeing perspective and to even have those perspectives heat up....that's what a forum is. But why on earth would you seek someone out just to give them a bad rep point?

Chances are, those that would get lots of those, well, everyone already knows who they are. In fact, those individuals probably already know who they are. I don't see the need to poor salt in a wound. Just my thoughts...trying to remain up, up, up in a down, down, world (as Zig would say)! :tiphat:

I agree with GGG, FAQ and Paul. What exactly does it matter if you have say 50 pts and someone else has 15 pts? In the grand scheme of things really? It's petty, but that's just me.

I hardly even remember to check my rep button. Its sort of a nonissue to me. Fact is, there's always going to be someone that likes your opinion and someone else that doesn't like it. Just like some will like this post and some won't, I just think it's so trivial to have to go give a pt. Why not just write it out in public for everyone to see what you liked or disliked about the post?

Edited to add: However, I do agree that if someone has to give negative pts, they need to reveal who they are. Simple. They don't get to hide behind some little red square.

This made me think of an important point. If the reps were to remain given anonymously, some unpleasant people could abuse the anonymity and harass people with no fear of getting caught (unless, of course the admin can track them down which I guess is likelY). Even a "good" rep could be considered harrassment if it's not welcome.

I did a bit of research last night. I went through both the TR site and here too.... Clicking on the member lists by alphabetical order. I found that when you pull up a page...let's say "I" for example... If you click on sort by reputation, it is not neccessarily in alphabetical order, or by reputation alone, but the number of posts.

So I wrote down the names of posters I recognized from both sites... compared them all... and discovered that FORTY of the top posters from TR now post here... No need to list the names... they are all here. So don't get freaked out if you think your "reputation" is less than someone, who let's say posts more than you do. The sort by reputation, goes by posts too... not necessarily good rep points. Just thought I would share this with everyone. I guess because this new type of software, you have to have 25 - 50 posts to be considered a "senior member" of a site... a 1,000 posts gets you a chance to put a custom line under your avatar. I think it is just an added incentive to keep the posters posting... and that is not a bad thing!! ;)
