I have to say, "The Tao of Poker: 285 rules to transform your game and your life" by Larry W. Phillips is excellent. It is a collection of rules to help one's poker game, but they are VERY useful rules to apply to life.

One of the rules I like in the book is to work on your game, not making money. And that poker is a game of making the right decision at each point, more than a game of winning money. There was another rule about one should be thankful if they lose early due to bad play, so they don't get bad habits.

The book has rules grouped into reading, and managing, body language, detecting deception, bluffing, managing luck, managing one's emotional states, knowing when to go for it, risk assessment, etc... Sounds like a business manual? Well, the more I have been following No Limit Texas Hold'em the more the game appears to be a useful simulation of life. So a book with basic rules on improving one's poker game would give tips on life.

No Limit Texas Holdem is interesting. Players are dealt two cards at start. Then 3 more are flipped over, then one more and one more. So, only two of the seven cards are face down (and they are unique to each player). This can serve as a useful metaphor for life. Everyone is dealt a small amount of natural ability in life, plus have some cash to put in. Events reveal themselves over time. And, the player with the best hand who stays in the game, wins. It is important to know when to go for it, and when to stay out. One can put all of one's credibility on the line to (which represents going all in). And, so long as you are alive, and have more money, you can always start up a new game.

Anyhow, I really like the book, and highly recommend it. You will find it in the game section, with Poker playing hints books in the local bookstore.

Not at this moment. I just look for success books. No limit Texas Holdem has piqued my interest, but I am not playing yet. Watching the game on cable has got me interested in it, the reduction in the amount of luck I had thought was in poker based on what I saw on Texas Holdem.

- Richard ..... and I'm sure that Shana Hiatt has nothing to do with your watching poker on TV? :biglaugh: A Hot Babe beatin' most of the men at "his game"? She's got some kinda strategy!

WHO? :-) I never heard of her until you mentioned her. I did look her up. I was so unaware, I thought you were mispelling Selma Hiyat :-).

Anyhow, my interest is because I like games, and saw poker first on on the Travel channel (the World Series of Poker), and the cast of characters. One thing that piqued my interest was an amateur with the last name "Moneymaker" who won it all a year or two ago.

Well, I finished the book, and it is solid all the way through. One rule stands out with me from the book at this moment. It is Rule #249: Enter the White Fear. A really devastating loss can change your perception of the game.

A person goes on such a losing streak, their game is ruined.

White fear, in he case of the rules, is real bad. It is where you got ruined by an enormous losing streak that you gave up and became too gunshy. One person I know had this happen to him. So he pretty much retire when he was 40 or so, became a house dad, and refuses to get a job. He is waiting for the ship to come in, one where someone both dumps the idea and the money to make it so for him, into his lap. Oh, and he also to believe the idea is a good one to. I recently gave up talking with him. It is a large waste of time. Him calling self-help books, "bullsh*t" really was the end of it.

How someone who repeatedly whines about not having the money to capitalize on breaks, and refuses to save (because he can't afford to), is beyond me.

Richard,

I played Texas Hold 'Em for the first time in my life a few weeks ago, and it was great fun. I've only played regular poker before. But this was very interesting... we only played for small change. I broke about even. :thumb:
