View Full Version : How can we improve SV?

Tom

I'm looking for any suggestions, ideas, feedback, complaints, etc. that you may have. Perhaps we can make the forum even better. I can't make any promises, but both the chat and reputation system came about from a member's suggestion, so you never know.

Wow Tom,

I don't think there is much needed to be done at this point! I love that you keep improving the place all the time, as needed. This place has gone through a lot of change in 2 years!!

The only thing I can really think of, for guests and newbie's sake though - would maybe be under the FAQ section. There is a search there... but no questions are actually listed or referenced there. I think it would be a good section to explain about needing 25 posts before you can advertise anything, also about the reputation system, etc.... You know, have a list of actual questions there, that are linked with hypertext to other sections perhaps.... like User CP, etc..

That is really the only thing I can see right now! Thanks for always trying to improve this place Tom - you are great!!! :thumb:

For me, less is more, but nobody else will go for that so I'll keep quiet!

There are some, no? I see some. Like about 30. I understand we may need more, but you do see some, right?

Could we have flash sigs :)

Probably not. There are too many ways to do malicious things with embed. Not suggesting you would, of course, but as more and more people come in, I'm sure someone would try. Not a definite no though...I will take a good look at the options, when I get time.

Your right, I myself never thought of what I could do with that. For example I could play music and also force someone to go to a webpage ect.

Thanks for being our papa-tom-bear! Protecting us against the evilnet!

Tom
12-07-2006, 05:27 PM
That's been a big problem for myspace, from what I've read, forced redirects. Cookie stealing is another.

Each page only holds nine posts. I find this annoying as I have to trawl through pages to read an entire thread. Obviously it can't go on forever or else it will takes ages to load, but could we up the numbers of post per page up to around 15 or 20? I think that's about normal for other forums I visit.

That's the only thing I can nitpick at right now! Great job!

EDIT: I'm not sure if they use the same forum software as this site, but it would be great if you could toggle the option to let members select how many posts per page they want.

Tom
12-07-2006, 06:21 PM
Ok, I changed the default to 20, but also note, that you can change that to more or less in your CP options.

Add more skins :)

What about Mp3s?! I loved that! Maybe we can do it differently with a .com radio station?

Can we have emails

Martin(at)SuccessVibe.com

:D

If not SWI can we have LARGER sig space?!

Could you host a contest for a new SuccessVibe banner?! Not that the top one isnt awesome but people could compete to better the site?!

Are these suggestions helpful? Or are you looking for different kinds.

Tom
12-08-2006, 03:33 AM
Yes, those are helpful suggestions.

I've tried a few different times to integrate music/radio, and so far nothing has really worked, but I will keep looking.

Emails are possible, but I wonder if the extra load on the server wouldn't hinder board performance. A definite maybe though.

How big of a sig do you need, lol?

Banner contest...not a bad idea.

Tom
12-08-2006, 03:37 AM
If anything, my inclination would be to go with smaller sig space. Not that I'm going to impose that, but that would be my preference. The bigger sigs are, the more difficult it is to read the thread, at least for me.

I like contests, but it's harder than it looks to run a good one on a forum. Mosts posts in a given time? So easy to game that. Member of the month poll? Turns into a popularity contest, feelings get hurt. Random drawing? Not very exciting.

As for a banner contest, great idea for a lot of forums, but how many graphics people do we actually have here, you and Zaul? Are there more that I'm not aware of?

As to the image size in sigs, what kind of size were you looking for? I'm not opposed to upping it.

Masera
12-08-2006, 05:04 AM
Could we have 100 kb :D

About the graphic artists I don't believe that I am any better then most here, I just use the programs. Besides a Success Vibe banner would HAVE to be simple because of its size, thus complex people like zaul and me(?) wouldn't have the advantage since anyone could go into paintshop, put the banner size and just pick a text/color, with a logo?

Then again maybe your right.

Tom

If anything, my inclination would be to go with smaller sig space. Not that I'm going to impose that, but that would be my preference. The bigger sigs are, the more difficult it is to read the thread, at least for me.Smaller is better - size and volume. Big pics are not condusive to easy reading. I already have one person on Ignore because of this, and I'm sure they have good things to say. I have contemplated switching off all pics but at the moment this works for me.

Heavy pics would slow down the page loading. I'd switch 'em off.

Also, I'd like to see sigs limited as to number of lines. Some sigs take up too much screen height, making reading the posts more difficult.

I like the SuccessVibe banner as it is.

Contests? Not interested. But others may be. I have enough time-wasting thigs to do off-line. I'd rather waste time out in the fresh air. Wasting time on-line is not a fun prospect for me.

After a lot of thinking, I finally came up with something trivial to make the board better. Problem is, the board rocks, as it is!

But perhaps in the chatroom, find a way so that people can type in an "other" status. Right now, we have BRB, Busy, Here and Away... I think. It might be cool to be able to have an "other" status that would allow us to type in something like "On the phone", "Out to lunch" or just something silly.

Of course, as I said, this is a trivial request. The board kicks butt just the way it is...

Yeah, it's hard to think of many things because this place is good at what it is.

I am not a big fan of big sigs with pics, but I wouldn't want to supress people's creativity.

Competitions - yeah I can see your point Tom. There is another "success" site which has regular 21-day challenges - for people to step up and challenge themselves. That kind of competition with ourselves might be good - not to steal ideas, but you get the idea. But then, nothing stopping us doing that now.

I did wonder about the idea of a group challenge - sort of like the book, but decided to encourage people to work together as time allows. Like for example, raising $x for a particular charity for a given month, or challenging us all to go into our wardrobes and donate any clothes we don't need during a given month. Again, nothing stopping us as individuals doing that now, but putting it up as a group challenge gives us a sense of connectivity and can remind or inspire others to do it (maybe for the first time).

Not sure if this is getting too commercial - but what about a swapshop? i.e. you have a personal development program you are finished with, or a book and want to swap it with someone else for something they have? It could have its own forum.

If I think of anything else, I will do so.

Mark

I already have a spell check, it's in the right hand corner :hmm:

I find unless it checks as I type, I won't use it. 99% of the time, people understand what you mean anyway, so what's my outcome?

Grammer issues far outweigh spelling, if ya can't string a sentence together, I probably won't reply.

And it is the same old people fighting over and over and over and over and over again about everything and anything and on every single thread that is posted! :hopeless:

Change your attitude, change your outlook on life and your world will improve for the better as well as this success board. :yup:

Some people here only seem to be successful at one thing and that one thing is fighting all day long. Get a grip on yourself and stop poisoning this board with your toxic personality!! :nono:

And if you are reading this post and are insulted by it…..good!! Because that means that you have looked in the mirror and saw yourself in this post!! :yup:
