View Full Version : Best FREE web hosting?
David 05-24-2004, 03:04 PM Does anyone know of some really good sites that offer free personal web pages?
I'm looking for some place to toss up a couple of pics, a short bio, and some links.
What do you suggest? Thank in advance. ;)
David 05-24-2004, 05:06 PM Let me rephrase my question. Now that I have looked around at some web hosting companies, I think I am mental prepared to start developing three web based business idea's I have been pondering for awhile.
Those are (1) Health and nutrition oriented. (2) Customized clothing, and (3) Advertising and design related.
After reading some of the SucceesVibe member posts, I am aware that you all have some valuable experience that you may be willing to impart.
First question -Who are the web hosting companies you have had the best experiences with? and what are their links?
I'm sure that after I examine your suggestions I'll have more questions for you.
Thanks in advance! :thumb:

MantaRayz 05-24-2004, 05:44 PM David,
I've never really liked the "free" sites I've tried. There are always strings of one kind or another.
I currently have 3 sites through www.IPowerWeb.com (http://www.ipowerweb.com/). They offer a heck of a lot for only $94 per year:
Domain Registration and ownership
A bunch of page templates
Front Page extension support
EASY editing of your sight
25 E-Mail address
Forwarding services for those addresses
Darn near unlimited pages
and a buncha other stuff I'm just not thinking about.
You can also add Secure ordering services and other value added features at additional cost.
I also have one site at NetSol.com, and only keep it there because the transfer would require a complete overhaul, something I'm not going to do right now. It's a little more expensive than IPowerWeb (about $105 / year), and will probably move it over before the end of the year.
Free? If you are going to do this on a serious basis, I'd recommend you place the "free" sites near the bottom of your list.

I think rwaforums is referring to posting boards. Its funny how we just assume everyone know abbreviations and jargon that we use in our onw lives, isn't it?
BTW .... I got the Forums part, but what the heck is an RWA?

They seem to have free hosting, free e-mail (1 GigaByte!!!), etc. Might be worth checking out.

I've got 2 or 3 on this machine right now that will not be removed. Ad-Aware and SpyBot cannot seem to remove them.
Poop!

I've got a few things on my machine that spybot has failed to remove. :hopeless:
Manta Rayz, do you have a firewall installed?

Manta,
Have you tried removing them whilst not online? I have had this trouble myself and found that if online, I cannot remove the spyware. I think it is because the program is running in the background whilst connected.
Now, why didn't I think of that. I've had the same problem as Manta, but now that I think about it, I was probably connected when I tried to remove them.
Antiphrasis 05-31-2004, 02:23 AM Tom + Manta,
What version of Windows are you running?
If you are running XP you should check the start up folder in the start menu to see if there's any suspicious programs there.
Another place where you can find suspicious programs is by typing msconfig in the run menu. Go to the startup tab and check for spyware. You might also want to check under the services tab for some spyware. Check hide all microsoft services before doing this though.
Good luck! :)
jlknauff 07-13-2004, 09:04 AM FYI-a lot of the search engines and directories won't index anything hosted on free servers. I have had VERY good experiences with Blue City Hosts, and their price is outstanding. It's a great host for a new site that doesn't have a lot of bandwidth demand (you really won't build heavy traffic for several months)
MantRayz-about those files you can't get rid of, a lot spyware/adware make their files look as if they are windows files so you can't delete them. If you are running an older version of windows you can boot in dos mode and delete them manually. If you have 2000 or higher then you'll have to remove the HD, put it into another computer (as a second HD) and delete them that way. You mentioned Spybot-have you tried Ad aware? It's from a company called Lavasoft. www.lavasoft.de You may be able to wipe them with that and not have to go through all the other stuff

The shady companies that use spyware/adware have come a long way technologically and will bury their files in the Windows/system32 folder and also won't show up in the start up folder. Most of them also run as services rather than as regular programs (giving them higher priority on your system than your programs) helping them to hide. Also, like I mentioned above-they disquise themselves as windows files so many will appear as a Microsoft service.
