View Full Version : "As a Man Thinketh" by James Allen. The New Testament as a self-improvement book.
richardhutnik 05-30-2004, 04:04 PM I picked up, for $4 at a local Borders, the book "As a Man Thinketh" by James Allen. "As a Man Thinketh" originally came out in the 19th century. The version I have by Grange Books, includes: "As a Man Thinketh", "Above Life's Turmoils", and selections from "Byways of Blessedness". What struck me about the writing is how much NT writing was referred to in it. It is almost like Allen took the New Testament and turned it into a self-help book. Anyone else read this book? There were also references a bit to Eastern Religious wisdom material also.
This book may of been one of the first self-help books ever published. On page 6, preforward, this edition says that "As the Man Thinketh" has influenced such writers as Norman Vincent Peale, Earl Nightingale, Denis Waitley, and Tony Robbins.
Anyone else ever read this book? Could be the version I have is the one that has been published multitude of times, with all three works in it.

Scarlet Warrior 05-30-2004, 09:25 PM I downloaded a free copy in .pdf format a while ago from http://www.asamanthinketh.net. I have only read a few pages as yet, so I can't really comment on it.
I have seen other authors praise this book, and regard it as one of the classics.

junto 08-09-2006, 08:39 AM I would say the first is the Bible as you had mentioned. Check out Steve Scott, an author who wrote about Solomons writings. Very interesting. After reading his book, "The Richest Man Who Ever Lived" I have gone on to read a chapter in Proverbs each day.

Highschoolrichkid 08-09-2006, 08:48 AM Randy Gage once said that the problem with "as A Man Thinketh" is it's priced so cheap. He said if people really, really, new the value of that book, it would be priced at $50K.
In other words, Randy Gage said the info in that book is worth alot of money... :D
Penelope 10-15-2006, 08:25 PM Oh my god, I really love this book! I have several copies, including on my computer.
Batman 10-16-2006, 04:01 PM I read "As A Man Thinketh" once a month whether I "need" to or not
Karly 10-16-2006, 04:13 PM As a Man thinketh is one of the greats!
I've read it again and again and again.
The fact that it is so much like the New Testament
just adds to it's simple message.
(I have it available on audio
you can see it at my website)

Right on Jen, whenever I read the book(I try to read it once a month) I think to myself, "Wow, life is really beautiful." I really think it should be a required texbook in school instead of all the crap they read now. Imagine all the lives it would change...

Well ......... what might it take to make that so?
stranger things have happened!

I had never heard of this book until I was dating my current husband. He mentioned it in passing as the best of the Seuss books. I was surprised I had never seen it, being a Seuss fan. One year, we challenged each other to buy a bag full of the most fascinating birthday gifts for each other but we couldn't spend more than $20. So I found that book used and stuck it in his bag. When he saw it, he started crying. It was really a testament to how powerful that book was to him.
What's most amazing to me is that he IS what all of us strive to be here and in TR-ville. Yet, as far as I can tell, that is the only "self-development" book he has ever read in his life. So it goes to prove that you really DON'T need a library full of books and tapes if you just actually apply the principals in ONE of them. :D

Sometimes though, it takes finding that one that is able to make it click for you. For a long time, I read books and applied the principles, but got nowhere, because I wasn't applying them correctly.

Yeah that is true too - I know sometimes, for me, "the information" that I "need" has to come at me from a certain angle or I don't "see" :hopeless: it and therefore am unable to apply it
However AAMT gets me everytime - apparently it is written at the right angle:yup:

successimmersion 09-03-2007, 06:23 AM I heard a guy on one of the forums suggesting that all new 'Internet coaches' were only rehashing old stuff. Since early on in this thread, someone mentioned the Biblical book, Proverbs, I was reminded that 'there is nothing knew under the sun.' The principles (or laws) are immutable, always consistent. However, there are different takes on them.
'The Secret' is basically a book report on the 'Science of Getting Rich' by Wallace Wattles. Rhonda Byrne acknowledges that herself. I've heard a few nay-sayers comment that 'The Secret' isn't anything new. Well, they are correct. And everyone I've seen associated with it agree. As A Man Thinketh is one of the early classics that several modern authors have been influenced by.
However, there are some truths that can dramatically change people's lives that do get forgotten. At least they don't get noticed as much as they should.
I appreciate the classics as well as those who are restating old truths in their own voice and in a new way.
As A Man Thinketh is a life transforming book. I've read it at least 20 times. James Allen and others like him, were so far ahead of their time.
gucci99 09-10-2007, 08:58 AM To apply the book knowledge of James Allen took me 26 months.
I try meditation,devotion,reading...to change my thinking, so to change my life.
All this kind of things help.
But nothing change so much after i use Innertalk CD.
Let me give you an example to get you understand.
I read many books(Bible,Proverb,The power of positive thinking,The Intention experience, from Norman Vincent Peale to Anthony Robbin, Robbin Sharma....)
I learn to change my thinking by reread and reread.
But sometimes, my though hold me back.
I tell myself "I am happy""Today is the day that the LORD had created, so be GLAD and REJOICE". I Affirm it like the hell.(ha,ha, very very boring)
But after sometimes, i just fall back. My Subconscious mind got the stronghold that are too strong to break.
So, i recommend you Dr Eldon Taylor.
You Probably hear of him, he is the founder of Innertalk.
He wrote a bestseller "Choice and Illusion".
I remember when i was in college, i read a website talk about pornographic.
Very interesting, it said "Pornographic is Theory, Rape is Practice".
As James Allen suggest what the "seed" you plant will make up your though quality.
For my knowledge, i believe Dr Eldon Taylor had put James Allen though into practice(Of course, in a good way),
Changing our though is never been so easy in 21th century.
Have a look on his website, i wish i am contribute something to this universal.
Hope you enjoy!:D

Very cheap trick!!!
I just went to the above website and signed up for the free pdf version of the book. I followed a few links and found an option to sign up for 4 x 1 hr mp3 classes on the book which was half tempting me given Bats recommendation of the book itself. Anyway I clicked through to the order page (which was $77 for the mp3s) and was going to think about it for five minutes before placing the order... and what do I find there, but something else also in my cart that was valued at $177 - something that hadn't even been mentioned on the page or I had added to the cart.
To say that I am disappointed with Vic Johnson is an understatement, but it doesn't surprise me either. Lately I am getting rather disillusioned with the ethics and sincerity of quite a few people in the so called personal development arena.
Be diligent when signing up for things guys. There be sharks out there!
