View Full Version : Food For Thought
David 06-01-2004, 08:23 PM Well maybe I should have said food for the stomach.
I wanted inquire with the VibeTribe on what are the best types of food in your geographical locale.
Here in Texas, being close to the gulf coast and next to Mexico, Sea food and Mexican TexMex® seem to be the best foods in this part of the USA.
If anyone reading this ever journeys to Texas, I highly recommend going to any Mexican food restaurant, but fair warning, the food is hot and spicy. :D
(Don't forget your purple pills). ;)
Hispanics are highly reguarded as some of the best cooks in the State of Texas.
Now that I think about it, Chinese food here is great too. :)
Can you tell it's dinner time in my corner of the world?
No seaweed protein shakes for supper tonight. Honey, get the car keys, were going out for dinner tonight. :biglaugh: Don't be thinking that, my girl is a great cook!
Ugh...I'm famished and don't have a thing to eat in the house.
I'm in St. Louis. There is no particular special cuisine here. Last I heard, we had the largest Bosnian population in the country. But I couldn't tell you much about their food. Of course, we have some good Asian restaurants. We have some really good Thai food, and Sushi.
IAFPO 06-02-2004, 02:00 AM Well, Houston has the most restaurants per capita than any other city in the United States. New York has more restaurants, but Houston has more per person. :D
Well, lets' see:
Tex Mex - The best in the world. People sometimes call it Mexican food, but it really is Texas food, not Mexican. They really should just call it Texas food. Features a lot of meat and the price range is from average to expensive. (Perhaps this could be called Tex-Mex heavy on the Tex.)
Taquerias - People call it Mexican, but someone from Mexico will tell you otherwise. It's not Tex Mex, it's not Mexican, but only found in Texas. The best description would be: it is what Tejanos (hispanic Texans) typically eat. It is also cheap. Where else can you get a big huge burrito (5 times larger than Taco Bell) that will fill you up for only $1.50. (Perhaps this could be called Tex-Mex heavy on the Mex.)
Texas BBQ - Really it's own category of BBQ with a unique flavor.
Chinese / Vietnamese - Very authentic. Some places the waitstaff doesn't even speak English, it' so authentic. In New Chinatown the street signs are even in Chinese, in Vietnamesetown in Midtown, the street signs are in Vietnamese. Old Chinatown (the old warehouse district) is dying, don't go there, go to New Chinatown or Vietnamesetown instead.
Thai Lots of good Thai places as well.
Texas Steak Houses - I place these in a category of their own. If you've gone to a typical steak house, you wouldn't even be close to the experience of a true Texas Steak House. Very very good, but also very very expensive. But you do get quality and quantity you do not get elsewhere.
Good Hamburgers - There are several places such as Fuddruckers, Prince's, Goode Company Taqueria (yes, a Taqueria with great hamburgers, they also serve quail, pecan pie, and steak... this one is definately Tex Mex heavy on the Tex.).
More Ethnic Restaurants - Houston is a very international city with a lot of ethnicities. Almost everyone of them has a restaurant (it seems like). Definately get some Greek food while you are here. Very good.
Well, I hope that helped. :D
Scarlet Warrior 06-02-2004, 04:37 AM Over here in Northern NSW there is so much variety in the local restaurants, it is very hard to choose where to go. There are some very good quality Asian, Indian, Italian and good old Aussie surf 'n turf eateries.
I live just up the road from the Big Banana (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~arundell/bigbanan.htm), so needless to say the local bananas and other fruits are usually great quality.
You live near the beach Scarlet? Btw, excellent Jim Rohn quote!
Scarlet Warrior 06-02-2004, 05:06 AM You live near the beach Scarlet? Btw, excellent Jim Rohn quote!
Yep, I live about 5km from the closest beach. There is some great surf all along the NSW coast.... and some divine seafood as well. :)
That's really nice! Like 3 miles I think. You wouldn't believe how far I am from one. One day I will live near the beach. :)
Scarlet Warrior 06-02-2004, 05:29 AM Yes, it is roughly 3 miles. You will enjoy living near the beach.... the lifestyle is great. :yup:
MantaRayz 06-03-2004, 02:19 AM That's really nice! Like 3 miles I think. You wouldn't believe how far I am from one. One day I will live near the beach. :)But just think! YOU get to live ...... by ....... hummmmmm ....... the Arch? :hopeless: :hopeless: I hear theres a big river naer by! :yup:
But just think! YOU get to live ...... by ....... hummmmmm ....... the Arch? :hopeless: :hopeless: I hear theres a big river naer by! :yup:
Oh yeah, the Arch. :snooze:
A big river? So that's what that smell is!
IAFPO 06-07-2004, 01:09 AM We have lots of arches here, usually two of them next to each other. They are yellow. :D
MantaRayz 06-07-2004, 09:11 AM Golden Arches ...... I remember when the sign at the "new" McDonalds in town (Salem Oregon) would read "Over 9 million served," and it took months to change to 10 million. Didn't like 'em then, don't like 'em now. Although, about 25 years ago, when I had my dog (Black Lab/Shepard) in the back of my truck, I'd stop at mcdonalds and get a couple burgers for him, and toss 'em in the air for him to catch! (He liked Frisbee too!)
MantaRayz 06-07-2004, 09:17 AM But back to REAL food!
Like IAFPO & David said, the Mexican Food can't be beat here either! Sunny San Diego, just minutes from the boarder.
At the cheap stands (converted Taco Times, etc) $2.50 buys you a BIIIG Chili Rellaino. TASTY! Probably the one kind of food that I indulge on. Or a really good omelet. NOT Dennys or IHOP. Otrherwise ..... it's salads and good vegi stuff for this kid! ;)
Endurance 07-01-2004, 05:18 AM Colorado has a lot of microbreweries. I don't put much beer into my body these days but I gotta say that a nice glass of Fat Tire amber ale is something that I indulge in on Monday nights when the Broncos are playing.
That reminds of when I was younger and lived in KC. Can't even remember the name of the place now, but it was a microbrewery that made an amber ale that was out of this world. Used to go there on Sunday and watch the Chiefs play.
I rarely partake in alchohol anymore though either.
MantaRayz 07-03-2004, 05:48 PM So ....... is it the Football that causes the brews, or is it the brewskis that causes the football? Or are you dunkin' a couple cold ones this weekend too? :p
Endurance 07-03-2004, 06:22 PM You don't need a brewski to appreciate a good game. Not when the Broncos are playing. The beer is a bonus that I can give or take. The football- I could never give that up.
