I just read about this on Yahoo news. I had never heard of this "doomsday clock" before. Thought it was rather interesting! I felt this was the most appropriate place within Success Vibe, to post this. My very 1st political thread! :yikes:

I just thought it was an interesting topic. I only put it in the political thread, because the clock itself is based on political happenings. So... yes my 1st and probably ONLY political thread here ever! I will duck out now.... ;)

I didn't notice any political ramifications in your Life Purpose statement, Cat?! But you are certainly coming out of your shell if you dare visit the Political Forum.

BTW - there is one phrase that is absolutely verboten here -- "Why can't we all just get along!" That's absolutely forbidden!

I couldn't help notice the phrase in the article "...render nuclear weapons obsolete ..' How would they do that? Make something even more deadly? I know there are thoughts abroad in this wild and crazy world that would have Love as a way to put aside combat. But even if we were to buy into that, can we be certain the other side would, too?

Or will we be like Al Capone: You can get more done with a smile and a gun than you can with a smile alone?

Sorry I can't - the job is already taken by long time news anchorman, Lloyd Robertson. :D He does that the best!

No, no drawing me into these threads on a permanent basis. I just thought this was interesting, was wondering if anyone else had ever heard of this doomsday clock?

Yeah I am getting a little more daring, aren't I? I think you are rubbing off on me Spider!! :yikes: Just kidding...

BTW - there is one phrase that is absolutely verboten here -- "Why can't we all just get along!" That's absolutely forbidden! I can't agree to that! :nono:

Hey I am only able to discuss the clock - not the political intentions behind it! This part is over my head Spider! I can tell you this though, all over Vancouver are signs that say "Proud to be a nuclear weapons free zone" That is more along the lines of how we Canadians think. We have no desire to build nuclear missiles here!!!!

Or will we be like Al Capone: You can get more done with a smile and a gun than you can with a smile alone? Uhm, as a Canadian - that scares the heck of outta me! See ya! I am going back to the lounge now! :scared:

I'll just watch from this point on, okay? Okay!

This reminds me of Greenwich in London declaring itself a nuclear free zone when it had trains with nuclear waste running through it LOL!!!

How political is it?

The clock is a gauge used by the scientific fraternity based on opinion and probably the general climate of world events.

I liked Hawkins comments about global warming - I have seen GW debated a few times, about whether it's real or not. It's difficult to know who to believe really.

In my opinion, based on historical events, the biggest change is yet to come, and that will be the fall on the American Empire. And by fall, I don't necessarily mean overthrown by violence or terror, although I believe this will form a part of it. I mean that the world will start to look elsewhere for guidence, or financial power - India and China having the largest population could easily become the world leaders for investment as their companies and people mature.

Of course China would need a significant change in their politics, not impossible by any stretch. Since business oftens dictates goverment, and there are many very successful companies operating from China, especially the export of goods.

So maybe there should be a 2nd clock - the US's world domination clock -maybe it could tick backwards. :D

When that day comes, I would expected the US to implode, the way the USSR did, although for different reasons. And hopefully it will be as peaceful as happened with Russia. This would likely come about because of the high and rising cost of American labor and the low and reducing cost of transport and communications. Thus, I see the rise of the Indian and Chinese economies being part of this.

I view that with some misgiving - like war between these two countries as they fight for whatever oil is left remaining at that time. I suspect that the present industrialized world will be into alternative means of power by then and will stay outside the conflict, but the resulting conflict will be a world war, as today's other LDCs join in the fight for oil.

The 21st.Century will be very interesting.

Mark, what are Hawkins comments on global warming? I'm very curious to know.

I also wholeheartedly agree with your statements re: the US but you should throw Canada in there as well. I am continually amazed at how stupid some of us North Americans are with things like psychotherapy for pets (no offense to pet owners), Entertainment Tonight, Paris and Britney obsession, monetary obsession, petty useless arguments that mean nothing, continual global obsession with economic growth, medicate for any and all reasons, blah, blah, blah. The world is looking at us quite differently now. Thanks George.

We have no idea how lucky we've been. It's gonna' get pretty interesting around here in the next few decades. That being said, I hope I'm around to see it.

Stephen Hawking, the renowned cosmologist and mathematician, told The Associated Press that global warming has eclipsed other threats to the planet, such as terrorism.

"Terror only kills hundreds or thousands of people," Hawking said. "Global warming could kill millions. We should have a war on global warming rather than the war on terror."

Fear mongerers just find new ways to spread their cancer and we are all just too willing to oblige them.

It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!
