Does anyone have any experience with depression? What have been your solutions? What things have you tried and failed?

A friend of mine has a history of depression and gets little sympathy at work but seems to find some success with a technology called "Hemi-sync".

Never tried hemi-sync, but it looks interesting.

"Mental Illness" seems to run in my family, along several generations, so I'm quite aware of the struggles with depression and bipolar depression.

It is a complicated thing and I can't give any clear cut advice, but I can throw out a few things that I think generally speaking do help. Eating foods rich in B and C vitamins; getting regular exercise, even if it's just taking long walks; getting Lots of rest; meditating; changing one's thinking; avoiding certain stressful situations.

In some cases, I think it's unavoidable--If the brain chemistry is really out of whack, medecine is necessary. This can have drawbacks, such as side-effects and dependence, but it sure beats suicide or some other forms of self destruction. If the medecine works to lift the mood, it should then allow the person to work on improving their thinking, which is a definite positive in my book.

If your friend is a surfer, there is a very big forum on the subject. I'm not a member, but I found it in Google, and it looks to be a good place. http://www.depression-forums.com/

Hemi Sync is an interesting tool to use. I've got a set of CDs that I use frequently. The idea? To introduce sounds and music into the correctly 'synced' right and left brains. and to place suggestions directly into this occupied mind.

does it 'work'? well, I'm sure to a degree it does. Do it radically alter a persons thought patterns? i'm sure for some it does, and for others, it's a nice repetition of similar technologies and efforts.

Interesting. So there are similar things to Hemi-Sync out there?

I've never experienced deep depression or long-term depression, but I know some people that have.

I wrote an article on the topic:

Interesting. So there are similar things to Hemi-Sync out there?Yes, there are several different versions of the same technology. It by the way was developed for the CI .... lets just say, the intelligence community. Dr Monroe was approached to create this in support of Human Enhancement programs the millitary was testing. From that came what we today know as the Monroe Institute.

A guy I know is a bit of a "Mad genius", he could tell you a lot about it. He says Holo-sync is dangerous because it can have permenant effects to your brain's "hardware". He deals with only Hemi-sync. His wife is an epileptic and he has studied all about the mind, and he is very clever with electronics. He built a box he calls "the Gabriel box" which you plug you headphones into and a music source and it affects your subconcious. It helped a friend I have tremendously with depression, though it may have been psychosematic (is that the right word?) Anyway, he's now working on a piece of kit that can affect people's minds remotely, by pointing it at them and "firing".

Worrying, because if he can do it surely the "intellegence community" already can....

Hemisync looks cool. They have lot's of different CDs for everything from quitting smoking to accelerated learning. I think I'm going to order one and give it a try. I'm assuming you can just use a regular pair of headphones and don't need their expensive ones??

.... he's now working on a piece of kit that can affect people's minds remotely, by pointing it at them and "firing".

Worrying, because if he can do it surely the "intellegence community" already can......... and has been since Germany studied the phenomina in the 40s, and the subsequent Russian and UK studies and development in the and 50s, with Israel joining in the 60s. The US, seeing the need to "keep up with the Joneses" started research in the mid-70s.

A friend, once highly involved in the millitary and intelligence communities, wrote the book "Nonlethal Weapons - War Without Death" that is still used as a teaching tool in Military Schools. He was involved in the Remote Viewing Program as one of the operational viewers. Remote Viewing? This is done without the aid or need of mechanical device. And is almost certainly still being done to support activities of the inteligence communities throughout the world.

He now teaches Remote Viewing to people as a means to better understand and define their own individual place within the Universal Consciousness. And how we can each be a part of helping to Advance of the Human Condition.

laughter is great! I have a question for you all. A group of friends were talking about farmers and their sheep ;) , and one person said, "that gives new meaning to being on the lamb." I thought the comment was funny. Is that an old joke, or was he being original?

The best thing is to go to a doctor and take the medication that he prescribes. Sure, it may "go away" it may to up to six/seven months. Been there, done that...

Hello Tom,

Yes, you need specific headphones in order to feel the full effect of bineural beats. Is not a matter of quality, but you have to check if the headphones you are going to use can go down in very low frequencies (6 Hz should be fine). Most of the headphones do not go below 15 Hz even the really expensive ones. The best headphones I have found for bineural beats in a (somewhat) reasonable price are the Sony MDR 600.

My Dad (Cliff Kuhn, M.D.) is a psychiatrist and treating depression is one of his specialities.

When I saw the mention of humor, I just had to jump into this interesting discussion.

My Dad has prescribed humor for over two decades to his depressed patients - as well as his other patients with chronic, or reoccuring, illnesses and disorders. (He also specializes in treating chronic pain and cancer).

Humor is no panacea, but it is an incredibly powerful adjunctive natural medicine. Dad has researched humor as a natural medicine - and perfected humor's use as such.

Here are two completely FREE resources you might enjoy reading (and listening to):

1. He wrote an article about humor and depression (among over 52 free articles on his website). You can read it for free at http://www.natural-humor-medicine.com/depression.html

2. He has interviewed some fantastic comedians and "wrung" their comedic minds dry regarding humor and its power as a natural medicine. I'm talking about icons like Gallagher and Chris Rush - among others. And the interviews are quite hilarious (especially if you download the free audio files of the interviews!) You can read AND listen to them for free at http://www.natural-humor-medicine.com/humorous-interviews.html

I must stress that Dad would NEVER advocate laughter as a replacement for the treatment your physician has worked out with you. But if you're depressed, or know someone who is, you must look into the regular, regimented use of humor as a natural medicine.
