View Full Version : what business are you in? jlknauff 07-18-2004, 03:56 PM Curious-what business is everyone in? Or-better yet, what's your real passion? Are you changing careers or starting a business? Tell us about it :D Cemiess 07-19-2004, 07:43 AM Despite working my way up to Production Manager after 2 years (supervisor after being an assembler for 3 months, acting manager after 1 year) what I really want to do is programming. I'm currently doing a Microsoft Certified Professional in C# and a Sun Certified Programmer in Java. That's where my passion is - solving problems. And programming's a great logical way of doing it. I have awesome ideas that become real for someone else within months of me thinking of it, so I think once I can create the software, I can call on my electronics and business skills to create some kick ass products - or a kick ass hi-tech company! jlknauff 07-19-2004, 09:45 AM Very cool, do you have any working knowledge in any programming yet? Cemiess 07-19-2004, 10:24 AM I made lots of stuff in Visual Basic at school, but this is my first real experience with Object Orientated Programming. Damn there's a lot to take in. And C# has a concept called "Delegates" that I just can't get my head round. Apart from that, I love it! Gregfolio 07-21-2004, 05:32 AM My current paying job is as a computer programmer using the age-old language of COBOL for an accounting product called JAMIS Financials. In my spare time, I started a small business with Cemiess called Power Essence. As I mentioned briefly in another post-reply, it covers many of the same issues that Neo-Tech Publishing addresses . . . and more. I also created a portfolio website of my artistic painting, photographs, and writings. Eventually, I'll upgrade Gregfolio.com html and interface to be more consumer friendly. I'm very interested in turning my first novel into a movie: "River of Souls - The Epic Journey". I also have a strong interest in computer graphics and animation. I did a short Shockwave animation experiment for Power Essence in the early days of development, and it's available to view at my Lightning Zone Animation page. By the way, my Avatar image is part of the background I use for my homepage and for the Lightning Zone pages. It is a time-lapse photo of holiday lights. Gregfolio :tiphat: Tom 07-21-2004, 05:38 AM Cobol huh? Don't they do that on an abacus? ;) Yep, cool avatar! Gregfolio 07-21-2004, 06:17 AM LOL! :biglaugh: Yeah, stone beaded abacus! Plus, the software bugs come stuck in prehistoric amber! Maybe it's time I upgrade my skills to C++ or something. I've studied a little Visual Basic, and I did start on the C++ book, but I started other projects so everything else is on the backburners. If I could eliminate sleep all together... and slow the rotation of the Earth so there's more hours in a day...! Dino-folio GSwee 01-31-2005, 09:10 PM I am helping other people realize their dreams. A little more specific: I am helping people become healthier, more energetic, look better, have a better quality of life and gain financial freedom. Lane 02-14-2005, 09:47 PM Currently... Telecom. B2B Sales. And also working on hosting a site (and other motivational endeavors) sarah 02-24-2005, 06:30 PM Good topic. I went to college to be a Designer, graphic designer and that is my goal to get into the field of design and be a graphic designer someday. The reason why I picked that field is not only do I love art, but I learn more and more about the challenges and problems that designers face while being in the field. Very interesting to me and it seems to never get boring where there is a dull moment. That is what I want. Plus, I love reading about design more now then I ever have when I was in college. jlknauff 04-08-2005, 08:18 PM Sarah-you should post a link in your sig if you have a web site. Many of the people here may need a designer. You could offer a resonable price as a new designer, they could get some quality work with out spending a ton of money (important for start ups) and you would get some exposure. :) airpaden 05-27-2006, 01:28 AM Despite working my way up to Production Manager after 2 years (supervisor after being an assembler for 3 months, acting manager after 1 year) what I really want to do is programming. The Business of making money :) Jennihul 10-29-2006, 11:13 AM I really enjoyed this kind of thread in "the other place" so I thought I would drag this one up from the basement and see what happens here.:bouncy: I am in healthcare, specifically radiology. My real interest, though, is in 'alternative' (a term I hate) health and wellness and real nutrition. Allopathic medicine likes to think they have the market cornered. :cookoo: So, by day I zap innocent human flesh with ionizing radiation to help people diagnose what is wrong with them, or right with them, as the case may be, and then by night learn about why conventional medicine is not necessarily the best thing for people and what fringe science is saying is a better way. Nice tension there that keeps me from thinking I have all the answers like many in my world. I like it because I can keep one foot in each world and not completely discount one way over another. My husband is a manager for a large computer company. How about you? Jennifer joanne1216 10-29-2006, 11:27 AM What other place??:hmm: Anyway, this January will be 13 years that I've been working fulltime as a medical secretary for an Otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat). So, for all you smokers out there, I've seen total laryngectomy's...which is ripping your voice box out and many other cancers due to smoking, so quit now!! I also work part-time doing medical billing for another ENT. It pays much better than the secretarial but I don't enjoy it half as much!
