I was always a great writer in schoool. I've been told several times that I had a good formal style. I was going to buy a book about selling stories to magazines, websites, etc to make a living from home. I was wondering if anybody has any experience in this field and if they have any books to recommend.

This would be a great oppurtunity to try out creative writing, and see if I could become successful in this field.

Thank you in advance.

There's a book called Writer's Market that's put out every year by Writer's Digest magazine. It lists up to date information for all the magazines and places that you can submit your articles, stories, poems, etc. You should be able to use one at the library.

Also, you might want to consider registering over at elance.com and bid on freelance writing projects. There are always people looking for people to write articles, web content, ebooks, books, ezines, autoresponder courses, etc.

Good luck with it!

You might want to try www.constant-content.com. It's a new site, but growing quickly. Basically, you upload your stories, articles, etc and people can either buy a single-use license or an exclusive license.

I've written more than 100 articles in the last 10 years (on business and tech stuff), and I'm now making about 50$/week off of this site, doing nothing more than I was before.

Tom,

Thank you for your help. I will see if my library has that book or maybe buy myself a copy.

I've checked out eLance. It seems to be a great service, the only thing is that it's pretty expensive to register... $120 per quarter if I can recall correctly. But I bet it is a great investment. =)

Jeremy,

Thanks for the heads up. I will register on the site tomorrow. Do they pay you weekly? And also how do they pay you? Paypal?

They seem to have an affiliate program, so Jeremy if you have an affiliate link or something I'll put your name in there.

I'm really inspired to write something now. I just hope that they think I'm good enough.

Thanks again guys for your great help!

They do have an affiliate program, no idea how it works though. They pay you monthly, assuming you make more than [x] amount (I think it's 20$).

Jeremy,

I'll sign up. I've read the FAQ and I didn't see mentioned anywhere how much the commision is, i.e. the percentage. Around 50% or so?

So are technology and business stories the great sellers?

Thanks!

Hey,

Time Management stories are fairly popular. The commissions... You're right, it doesn't say. I think it's actually higher than 50%, but I can't remember. Sorry :(

No worries, thank you for your help. If I sell something I'll find out. =)

Time management, eh? Looks like I've got to study the subject in depth.

I found this info on the website on commision:

Percentages of sale:
Author (you): 50% of every sale
Affiliate: 25% of every sale
Referring Author: 5% of every sale
Constant-Content: 20% of every sale

They even gave me my own referral link: http://www.constant-content.com/?aref=138 ;)

Just kidding, put it up here. =)

One question, how many words are your articles in general?

Thanks,

I just wrote a short book review... Only 300+ words. But practice makes perfect. =)

Tom,

I checked out a copy of Writer's Market 2003 from the library. That book seems to have an endless amount of publishers looking for material.

Thanks again for the tip!

Tom,

Well, one can always dream. I was browsing through the book on the train today coming home from San Diego and I was pretty impressed with the wealth of information in Writer's Market. Thousands of listings for different book and magazine publishers with all the relevant information. It almost felt as if there was too much information. =)
