I think this has big money in it i invested into one 3letter.net and find my self make big bucks now.

SO for those that want to know where to start i recommend spending money on a 3 letter.net that might be underprices and there are so many of them.

Interesting! I've dabbled in investing in domains from time to time myself. I've made a little money doing it, on occasion.

Define "big bucks". Sorry, but the domain speculation business is one I'm intimately familiar with, and there are very few people making anywhere near enough to quit their jobs.

big bucks = $500 on a good week compared to my hosting company -12.00 lol not really big bucks but its enough considering my job pays well already

LBurn,

That's pretty good money. And that's all from your 3-letter .net domains?

I've always wanted to do some domain name speculation. But nowadays you have to be careful not to register any trademarked names or the companies will take you to court.

By the way, do you godaddy to buy the domains or do you have your own domain registering service?

You can really get stuck holding the bag with Domain Names...

I own about 40 domain names. Some of them are for future projects, some of them are for future companies (contracting businesses) and some of them are to beat out my competition.
Example: I run www.contractortalk.com
I also own contractorstalk.com contractorforums.com contractorforum.com etc...

A few sites I've thought about for the future are:
ideascafe.com - Business/money making ideas site
inctalk.com - business discussion site
BuyInside.com - Amazon affiliate site? (slogan: Why Go Out)
F150forums.com
handymanforums.com - Home Improvement Site

For me, these are some good names but the bottom line is that unless they are developed they are probably worth nothing. I have to be prepared to pay the renewal fee every year ($7.95 @ GoDaddy) until I set them up.

I know guys that have ended up with $2000 registration bills and were never able to sell their names.

It can be profitable but I'm just saying that its risky too (Sorry, I'm long winded)

One the other hand I registered W3Talk.com and was offered $100 2 hours later. So theres an example of it working although I didn't take it.

Nathan,

I've been thinking of acquiring some good domain names for reselling. Anything you have to think of when doing this? Just use paypal to accept payments and then transfer over the domain pretty much?

I do all my payments through Paypal. Sure they take a % of the sale but its worth it to get your money right away.

I've gone a little further, I've set up a LLC for myself. Wingate Solutions LLC. www.WingateSolutions.com (http://www.wingatesolutions.com/) . This provides you with a little protection whenever your doing business. Selling domains is pretty safe but if you register someones trademark and then sell it to someone you could find yourself in some hot water.

Other than that its pretty easy, just submit a transfer request.
I use www.GoDaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com/) to register the names and I use the "power search" tool on www.deleteddomins.com (http://www.deleteddomins.com/) to find good ideas.

But once again... its hard to make a lot of money selling domain names. You really have to find something someone wants.

Nathan,

Thanks for the great tips. They'll be very helpful if I start selling domain names. I usually did all my searches on http://www.whois.sc, it's a great domain name search tool.

Nathan,

I forgot to ask you something. Where do you usually sell your domain names? On webmaster forums, ebay, or somewhere else?

Thanks!

I've had good success selling them on eBay. Webmaster forums of course are a good place. And the domain forum. http://www.dnforum.com/

LBurna,

Maybe you know the answer to this question... which is more popular for hosting companies a .com or .net address? Example: veryfasthosting.com or veryfasthosting.net?

Thank you in advance! =)

.com always lets say you register a .net and your company gets big and someoen takes the .com and mostly likely some of you customers will go to that .com. Basilcy .com is most important and valued extension then .net then org.

Lburna,

Thanks I figured .com would be bigger even for network, hosting, and isp companies who are supposed to use the .net domains.

I just bought a domain name QuicksilverHosting.com, not sure if I'll get my own hosting business running or sell this to somebody.

Thanks!

If yoou plan to start a hosting business i can give you some tips and help to get started and start you off with a reseller account. Also you might not think this but i get more domain sells than hosting because my domains are cheaper than godaddy so you might wanna focus on that too.

Lburna,

Thank you so much. If I have any questions I'll get in touch with you. How do you feel about the domain name?

Thanks again!

If i was to give it a value it would be $20 for it but thats alot for an undeveloped hosting domain name except like BlockHost.com or CubeHost etc which are worth like $500. Through time you might want a more professional name though inoticed when i did a name change people were more interested and didn't think i was 17 trying to be a webhost instead they though he has to be 25 or up which i am.
