View Full Version : what have you done lately?
jlknauff 08-16-2004, 09:18 AM Hey, a thought occured to me. A lot of people focus on what they are doing wrong or what they need to improve-but IMO, they rarely think about their strengths or all the great things they have accomplished. I think both are important so lets all spend a few minutes and toot our own horns. Tell us something you've accomplished and are proud of!
While you're at it throw a few positive notes to some of the people in this forum :thumb: If they helped you find an answer or solution let them know it's appreciated.
I'll start :D If I had to say I was proud of something in particular right now, it would be having the balls to start my second business after my first one crashed and I lost everything. Most people would give up and fall into the 9-5 rut.
And for my positive note, I want to compliment Tom & the moderators here (and everyone else who contributes) for creating a great forum where people like us can help each other.
MantaRayz 08-17-2004, 11:13 AM Awesome Point Jeremy! Foucus is EVERYTHING! If you Focus on the Light, your going to see Light. And see light in areas that others, who only focus there, see dark. The negative is ALWAYS there. It surrounds us on a constant basis.
But just as negative surrounds, so to does the Positive, the Inspiring, the Uplifting, the Empowering.
You just gotta know where to look for it. And it ain't in another person, or event, or situation, or piece of music. Sure .... you'll be able to find 'em there. But where does one REALLY find it?
~ WITHIN ~
WE are the Lens that we see the World through. WE are the determining factor in how Great was our Day, or how cloudy it seemed.
Look for the Light, and You'll find it.
BE a Light, and You'll help others see their own Light.

And for my positive note, I want to compliment Tom & the moderators here (and everyone else who contributes) for creating a great forum where people like us can help each other.:thumb:
Gregfolio 08-25-2004, 07:35 PM I finished installing travertine rock tile in my deceased father's house - master bath-vanity-closets and downstairs 1/2 bath, and I'll soon start on the second upstairs bathroom - so my mom can sell the house. Hopefully, I'll have it all completed by the end of August.
I will be installing travertine rock tile in my mom's house - three bathrooms - hopefully by her birthday September 11.
I'll soon be installing three pendent lights in my kitchen - by end of September.
I'm also going to wire and prepare three sets of track lights in my living room - by end of September.
Then I'll paint the entire living room and dining room with Venetian-style plaster. You trowel this stuff on, so it takes 5 times longer to apply! Hopefully I'll complete this by mid October.
Next, install the three track lights in the living room - mid October.
Replace the dining room light - mid October.
Replace all the old electrical outlets with cool copper faceplates and black outlets- mid October.
Lay hardwood floors in the living room and dining room - by end of November.
Yikes!!! And start the whole upgrade process for my hallway, bathroom, and bedroom – rock tile, hardwood floors, venetian plaster paint!!! Begin all this other stuff by January 2005.
All that and work a regular paying day-job, post to forums like this one, write articles for Power Essence, do some artistic paintings, start writing my other novels, upgrade my website, get my paintings in galleries, animate my first novel into a movie, and laugh as much as possible!!!
Wish I didn’t have to sleep!
jlknauff 08-25-2004, 07:44 PM Wow! You have any experience with that?

There were a number of accomplished/future goals in my reply, so I'm not sure what you are asking about, Jeremy, so . . .
I watched and helped my girlfriend lay Uba Tuba granite in my condo kitchen, and that's how I learned about installing rock tile. Putting travertine in my dad's place is my first solo attempt. I'll have some pictures to show soon. I'm almost finished with the third bathroom, and the other two bathrooms look great!
One of my brothers and I replaced a large portion of brick patio for my mom about a year ago. That was our first attempt at that type of renovation.
This first shot is from the old brick my dad laid back in the late sixties, looking out at the newly laid section two and three.

Here's a close-up of the brick-and-a-half double circle I cut and positioned.

I only have basic and recent experience rewiring outlets. My old condo (built in 1975) has a combination of standard copper wires and aluminum wires, so I'll have to compensate for that mismatch. Adding new wiring and lights will be new experiences.
I've only applied Venetian-plaster in my kitchen, so I have basic experience for that. At that time, I applied one coat and then waited about a month before applying the second layer - which is really a partial layer. Waiting actually accentuated the color difference between the two layers and added to the plasterized affect.
I don't have any experience installing wood flooring, but my multi-talented girlfriend does have experience doing it, so I do have an expert to help me.

Check with your condo association to see about any update/conversion assistance they might offer. If not, check with your Homeowners Insurance to see if they offer anything. City/state programs might be there too.
Copper/Aluminium is a dangerous combination (and far outside modern fire/building codes) that has caused many fires. I don't want to alarm you, but I would suggest you have someone qualified with Copper/Alum remodels available for advice and back-up. Better to pay a few dollars now and have it safe, than to pay much more later.
Good luck on your extensive remodels! Awesome experience for future projects!

Yes, you are totally correct. I should have said "dangerous mismatch", because even if done properly the copper to aluminum contacts will deteriorate and become unstable after so many years. They have special twist-connectors that have gray goop inside to help stabilize that. But yes, eventually I should have all the aluminum wires replaced.
That multi-talented girlfriend I mentioned is also well versed in electrical work. Plus, I have another friend who is a licensed electrician whom I'll probably get to do the work to be safe and compliant with building codes.
Gregfolio 09-14-2004, 03:37 AM You hafta sleep? ;)
Earlier in my life, I thought I needed about 10 hours of sleep a day. These days of jammed-packed creating and doing what I love find me staying up very late. Sometimes I only get about 4 hours of sleep a night. Often it is me pushing my physical limits, but I'm also very excited about the things I'm working on, so the integrations, anticipation and excitement can be extremely energizing.
:yikes: It's 1:35ish AM! Maybe I'll get 6 hours tonight.
