View Full Version : Request clarification regarding self-promotion.
Spider 03-21-2007, 08:18 AM Tim (Wanderer) recently had his thread (http://www.successvibe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3435) asking for advice on his new website moved to Classified because there was a link to his website.
It seems clear to me the link was not self-promotion - and was *clearly* not self promotion because Tim said, 'Don't go there' because there's nothing to see yet. And, indeed, there isn't! The thread was about getting advice.
Moving the thread to the Classififed, pretty well guarantees that he will receive no further advice. Plus, other people who might benefit from the discussion, will now not do so. And it isn't an advertisement, anyway.
I think Tim's thread will better serve this community by being moved to the Business section.
Could we have some clearer guidance on what is considered self-promotion in this forum. Does *any* link to *any* website now constitute self-promotion or advertising?
MantaRayz 03-21-2007, 08:33 AM Could we have some clearer guidance on what is considered self-promotion in this forum. Does *any* link to *any* website now constitute self-promotion or advertising?I'm curious what your real question is Spider. linking to personal or business site is a form of self-promotion, and that is self-promotion. a link is a link, dead or not. I remember you making a pretty big deal about that one day.
and ..... why do you think he will receive no further advice? Those interested will offer advice no matter where it's located.
Moderator 03-21-2007, 08:37 AM To answer your question, the entire post was about getting feedback for HIS own personal website, which there was a url link to that site within his post, which is a no no. Links to your own sites or products or services within posts are considered self promotion, period. Whether the link he posted works currently or not, is not at issue. Anyone who posted to the thread will still be able to reply to it. It was merely moved.
While Wanderer is a Super Mod, even we mods have to follow the same rules too. There is no special treatment for we mods either, we all have to follow the same rules. Fair is fair, after all. We mods are a unified team and help keep one another in line, and have great rapport. It was not done out of malice.
You can post links to websites in posts, as long as they are not links to your own websites or to any that you are affiliated with, within the body of a post. We hope this helps to clarify the rules. If the url was not posted, it would not have been moved to the Classified section. He knows the rules, he could have put it in Classified's himself or not posted the url..... We mods all get along very well, and help one another out quite a bit. So don't read anything malicious into the thread being moved. Fair is fair though.

Moderator 03-21-2007, 09:28 AM I know that wasn't your intent Wanderer. However it could very well appear to be self promotion, and technically it was with the link in the post. More importantly, the members here need to know we as mods are also held to the same standards as members are. We mods do not get special treatment or bend the rules to suit ourselves. That is something that is important for everyone to know. I am glad we were able to resolve this in this public manner, and for the members to see we all play by the same rules. There is no Us vs. Them at work here, we are one community. :tiphat:
Spider 03-21-2007, 10:00 AM Then, could we have a forum for 'Help with our own websites'
Tim asked for feedback. In the past, I have asked for feedback on my website and have received a great deal of help resulting in major changes which resulted in being offered $10,000 for it which sale is now being effected. I have also given my feedback on others' websites, hopefully with similar beneficial effect.
I think a sub-forum for such feedback within the Business section would be useful.
As to general discussion, it seems to me odd that we can answer a question on something about which we are knowledgable by referring to a competitor's website but not our own.
In this case, is it within the rules - the spirit of the rules - to say, "The answer is on my website (see Sig.)" without actually having a link in the body of the message but with a link in the signature about ½" below?
Is that the correct format?
Moderator 03-21-2007, 10:04 AM I don't think there needs to be another sub forum for that. You are free to discuss those issues, just not post links to your websites or any that you are personally affiliated with, within the body of a post.
To post a link to your website, it must be either in the Classifed Section or done through PM's. A link to your website may be added to your signature as well, providing you are a member in good standing and have 50 posts or more. Hope this helps answer your questions. :tiphat:
Spider 03-21-2007, 10:15 AM Thank you.
Moderator 03-21-2007, 10:23 AM You're welcome. :tiphat:
Jennihul 03-21-2007, 07:55 PM It's almost moot since it can be in your signature line five millimeters lower. I mean really. Aren't we splitting hairs? I think people love rules for the sake of rules.
