View Full Version : Thread removal
BillieBoJimBob 09-21-2007, 01:58 PM Can we make it so that threads cannot be removed without a majority approval from the community?
Sometimes people go off the handle. Sometimes they show how their anger controls them. I think this is valuable to understand who people really are. If someone is a bigot and they post something that shows it, that post should stay so people know who they are.
You can certainly lock it so it is not bumped up, but if someone wants to search on that person they should be able to.
Coach Morse 09-21-2007, 03:21 PM IMO threads should not be removed at all. If people regret what they said later, they can always go back and edit their post. I've done that before (hard to believe I know... )
just my two cents for the admin to consider...:tiphat:

Hang on, Hang on!. Requesting that someone not delete a thread is one thing ( understandable ), but how it makes the person look is another thing altogether. You have chosen "Bigot" in this instance, so would that be labeled against my post on the Muslim issue?.
Would you be labeling me as a Bigot !???. I just want to get this clarified a bit ?

When was any mention of you made?
This is a general statement that what people say should still be out there.
Let me give you a scenario why.
Person A has made a statement that xyz people are bad. They even go to the extent of defending that position.
Later in the week person A deletes the thread...But not before the internet has archived it for later use.
Person B comes along and develops a partnership with person A. person B eventually runs for office.
Now during background checks and general news snooping the partnership is made aware and it is discovered that person A feels such a way against xyz race.
Person B now looses the election because they could not easily review the persons character they entered into a partnership with.
Jennihul 09-24-2007, 05:40 PM This issue is not complicated.
You post. You pay.
If you are hestitant, don't post. If you are flaming, don't post. If you are a general idiot not in control of your emotional state, don't post. If you are a whining needy wanka, and you tend to have post-thread remorse, don't post.
Many people here work hard and carefully on their responses. They don't deserve to be made virtually mute just because a thread starter has second thoughts.
Suck it up, sucka!

Auswithspirit 09-24-2007, 07:47 PM To me this is the first real effect of making people on the internet accountable but not being able to remove what they have said out loud in an open post .
To me if you post , something and later learn it was a mistake you post an apology ...this shows growth and learning , something to be respected .
If someone constantly posts crude nasty posts ...well this to will be obvious and i dont think many will contribute to this ...

It seems that unless your perfection, you shouldn't post to the more superior and enlightened people on the SV forum.
This comment reminds me of Linux users on forums for whom wont give help to people due to the fact they want you to research it all yourself and never ask for help. They are "experienced" users and have their nose generally in the air.
We weren't born perfect Jennifer, we are never going to be perfect, so accept these faults people like myself will sometimes have and think back to a time when you weren't so damn perfect. We all learn from our mistakes, and i really had no idea this was going to be such a big issue, since ive never experienced this in a forum before.
And you say that others users work hard to respond to posts, but if you really want to help the person and it makes them "happy" to remove the thread they have started because they think it may cause more distress for themselves than good and they think it was wrong to post it ( Yes, we are "human", we make mistakes ), then why not support that!?. Or is it all about you ?. But lest not forget that this "is" the ME generation, its all about ME ME ME isn't it these days !!..
We bought Anthony's program to begin with due to not being fully in control of our lives!. Thats what this forum is "actually" about!. Learning and not being ridiculed by others for the very mistakes we are attempting to fix. And emotions are one of them!!
Or have we just become so full of ourselves on here?

I know your not referring to me now, but you really "are" ready to tar someone with your giant brush which makes you understand who they "really" are pretty quickly eh!. Lets not take into consideration, personal experiences, cultural backgrounds, accepting that the entire world isn't America, and different countries have different ethnic issues, as well as a whole plethora of other things people may chose to write about that you may have very little understanding of yourself but bring out the brush anyway.
Nope lets just walk in with politically correct tunnel vision and label people, bigots, racists, arseholes, dickheads, wankers. etc. Hey we can get all that from one post!. Looks like Dr.Phil is in session.
Cat Lover 09-25-2007, 03:40 AM I said this in another thread and I'll say it here. If you have remorse about posting something... which I have a couple of times in the thousands of posts I have made.... you just go into your original post and edit it and add "....."
Now if someone has quoted you, you can always ask them via PM to edit their post to take out your quote. Most people will do this for a fellow forumite. The only ones that won't are argumentative anyways. Everyone here who posts or starts a thread has the RIGHT to ask a thread get deleted. The problem is, moderators don't want to keep deleting threads because someone has remorse over posting something all the time. I can see how that could drive the mods crazy in no time flat. Especially if the same people keep asking for threads they start to get deleted. It takes some personal responsibility as well as community cooperation and understanding too. (And patient mods..)
Im my opinion, it is about BALANCE. Keep in mind when you post that you may be quoted. Keep in mind it is possible it will stay here. But also keep in mind the internet is like a huge white board and it can all be erased either purposely or accidentally at any given time too! Don't get so attached to your words of wisdom that you get offended if a few of your posts are deleted. They served a purpose and people read them... next! I also understand there are some threads that the majority want to see stay and not get deleted. But is it not an issue we can say BALANCE is a better approach? I like to hallucinate that we can achieve that balance here. :yup:

Jennihul 09-25-2007, 06:16 PM Oh, Bladey, just be a man, for god's sake. I'm not talking about perfect. I'm talking about sucking it up if you post something and then think twice later.
Too late. It's out there. That's life in the big internet. What distress could a thread here possibly cause? Seriously. If it's that big a deal, you shouldn't have posted it anyway. That's my point.
This is a success forum not fawking Dear Abby. Just remember that and you should have no posts that need deleting.

No you maybe haven't asked for a thread to be removed, but due to fighting a lot of ones you post to do get closed...... Just sayin....
Jennihul 09-27-2007, 05:30 PM It's not me...it's the buffoons who insist on fighting WITH me. :thumb: Pitiful creatures.
And I dispute that my contributions were the cause of the closures.
And when was the last time that happened, anyway?
Plus, standing one's ground in a debate and getting a thread closed is a way different mentality than trying to hide away one's regretted spew.
No fair dredging up stuff from a year ago, in another world. A male dominated, ego-iffic, testosterone saturated place, most of us no longer venture to.
