View Full Version : What does your "Internal Critic" keep telling you?

Corrine hit a valid point in another thread where she said, "I often hear the poor acused of handling money badly. Sometimes it's true. What I've seen happen more often, though, is that the ground under their feet is so unsteady from having struggled for so long, that when money falls in their lap or improves there are still a lot of things needing their financial attention before they can stablize financially. And so the money disappears."

It occurred to me that this takes us to a point where Stinkin' Thinkin' will be at its worst. This is where that Internal Critic has full reign and keeps screaming old stupid beliefs in our ear, beliefs we thought we had conquered but which keep recurring just when we need them the least.

My personal "Old stupid belief" is "The more I earn, the more taxes I will have to pay." OK! I know that the more I earn and the more taxes I pay, the more I will have in my pocket at the end, but the OSB (old stupid belief) still keeps popping up to confuse me.

What is your OSB?

I need to save up money before I attempt the big home repair projects.

Then the big ones don't get done, because I spent the money on the little projects.

basically my whole life, I've got all the books I want because I don't take the vacation I want.

I need to capitulate in arguments/discussions in order to have friends and progress in my career.

Not true, of course, but I do catch myself thinking this quite a bit. Mostly when I try to answer a question right away, but I conquer it by taking a breath and thinking before I respond. Hard to do because of another belief, that I must know the (an?) answer immediately and shout it out; but this OSB gets put down by the same 'taking-my-time' method.

I wonder how many of our beliefs build on and are reinforced by another.

The Acronym is a lot funnier if you called it Stupid Old Belief

Thank you very much...I'll be here all week.

Seriously, my "inner critic" tells me that I have to wait until A B and C happen before I can do what I want. And it tells me that I'm not good enough.

My first answer was much funnier...:yup:

I told it to STFU a long time ago. Either I can't hear it anymore, or the other voices are drowning it out... ;)

...I wonder how many of our beliefs build on and are reinforced by another.I would think all of them. Every structure must have a foundation on which it stands; every game has a field on which it is played.

I would think all of them. Every structure must have a foundation on which it stands; every game has a field on which it is played.
And every rose has its thorn ;)

I just wanted to play metaphors with you.

One of my beliefs is also the same as yours.
"The more I earn, the more taxes I will have to pay"

Unfortunately I find this to be so true.
My net income has increased $400 / month over the past 4 years
although my gross has increased by $30K
I seem to have found that spot where raises are worthless.
Uncle Sam loves a good employee!
But hey, I have 37 days vacation per year :rulz:

Now, I don't see this as an internal critic issue though because I have some fact base behind it.
The critic tells me I am not good enough at anything and that other people are smarter

Back to my first ignored remark of "I should stop listening to others opinions"
I could empower that to I trust myself.

Was it not good enough? :lildevil:

We are am closing in on the... $164k bracket? When I hit that I will undoubtedly lose money through one raise that year. but that only happens once- after you're through that bracket then it's the same as it was for 28% bracket or whatever. Unless you slide back and forth, once you're through you're through until retirement.

If you think things are totally out of whack, you may want to talk to a tax pro.

which leads back to my "lead domino theory" find the 1 disempowering belief that is the lead one... push it over and all the rest fall

Not so much with money, but with the whole PD movement...why do people pay so much money to go to seminars?

I want to go to a seminar more to find out what all the fuss is about than to absorb the information.

These seminars must be good, but I just don't get it...I watch DVDs of them and just feel happy I didn't spend all that money...so what's the deal?

how Japanese do you consider yourself? Enough so that a mass hypnotic event aimed at Americans might seem strange? This reminds me of a Swiss friend we had who literally could not stand to go to sporting events because every mass event that she saw, like people doing the wave or cheering when someone hit a home run equaled Naziism to her. eesh. But think about a southern gospel revival and getting swept away in that, that's how I interpret these conferences.

I have no intention of going to a $1000 event either, but the deal is that people pay to get swept up in the emotional high of attending them and seeing their life laid before them without any worries. That's probably not the reality for most of them, but enough of us are hooked into the concepts for our lives to have improved. When it comes to things that people will pay for to feel good about themselves, I don't believe these are horrible events.

Why do people pay so much money to go on vacations, cruises, etc? It's probably for the feeling they think they will get from the experience.

I want to go to a seminar more to find out what all the fuss is about than to absorb the information.

I went on a cruise in 1994 - some of my co-workers go on cruises at least once a year, so there must be something to it, right? Personally, I don't see what all the fuss was about. I'd prefer a seminar over a cruise any day. Guess it's personal preference as to how you want to spend your time and money. :yup:

...and isn't that true of everything? I mean, advertisers spend thousands of dollars making you feel like you "need" products to make you feel [slim], [beautiful], [loved], [smart], [insert other feelings here], so why not spend it in an area where you FEEL GOOD and learn new strategies for living your best life as well?

To all above:

Yes, I understand the idea that it makes you feel good. That's why I consider it a limiting belief I have...I just don't see how it can make you feel that good...and that's why I will probably try a seminar sometime in the future (most likely Australia or Fiji) so I can at least satisfy my curiosity.
