Awake at Last

I'm moving from my townhouse into a 1 bedroom apartment a week from tomorrow (July 26). I have been VERY good at procrastinating going through boxes and purging old stuff I've been lugging around with me for years, from home to home. Now it's time to seriously dump this crap! I will end up storing some things in my parents' basement because my apartment + the storage room at my apartment just can't hold it all. But I need to be careful because we don't know how long they'll be living at their place.

So I'm going to post my goal for the next two hours, just to make myself FEEL accountable, even though I know in reality nobody comes here on a Saturday afternoon any more! :biglaugh: The picture below is my current storage/laundry room.

I am going to open and sort through each and every box on those shelves. Everything will either be thrown, kept, or put in a box for Goodwill. Starting as soon as I get the stereo hooked up down there - gotta have some good tunes to work with & boogie! :dance2:

Awesome!

One thing I did recently was go through some old boxes of things from childhood, high school, and college. I had a lot of things with sentimental value, but they were mostly things I hadn't even looked at in years. Some of the boxes hadn't even been opened for years.

What I did was upack everything and allowed myself to put what I wanted to keep in just one large bin. Everything that didnt' fit had to go. I ended up taking pictures of a lot of the things, so that I could go back and look at them someday if I wanted to, but I don't need to keep everything to remember that I once had it, or that it was once special. i.e., I had my high school letter jacket. I don't need that anymore! I took a picture and tossed the jacket. I kept my yearbooks though. So, I didn't get rid of everything, just got a little more selective about what I did keep.

Good luck and be ruthless!

That's a really great idea, Meredith! We'll see how much stuff I end up wanting to keep - I may need to do that.

Well things didn't go exactly as planned but it wasn't from loafing around. I just got really organized first; set up all the empty boxes on one side of the family room so I could see what I had to work with, and then moved most of the boxes off the shelves & put them on the other side of the room. Somewhere in the middle of all this my parents came over to help. They were helpful, but it can be a little stressful & things get a bit off track, especially if we forget to keep an eye on what mom is doing :o. Organized the garage, too, in preparation to be "loaded" full of things to be moved. All in all it was a productive day.

Today...morning was killed by a migraine, then I worked noon-4, and just got done w/ supper & a little break. Going to kick butt on those boxes now.

Any of you cat owners/cat lovers - you can just imagine how much fun my two cats are having with all of the empty boxes downstairs - they're acting like two little boys exploring a jungle :D

I'm doing this same thing this week/weekend. I'm moving starting on Friday, and I have as many boxes as you do, Awake.

My strategy is to move the animals over to the new place first thing after I sign the lease, to get them out of the way. Then I'm going to make "keep", "sell", and "toss" piles, just like they do on the TV show 'Clean Sweep' on TLC. The sale will be Saturday and anything that doesn't get sold gets donated to Goodwill.

I can't wait!!!
