Goal setting is important, we all know that, but what motivates you to want to achieve those goals you've set for yourself?

I am motivated by the desire to have plenty of spare time to do the things I enjoy most, such as surfing and motorbike riding. Therefore my goal is to retire or semi retire by the age of 40, with enough income to support my family and my hobbies.

I have also had persistent health problems lately, so good health is also a strong motivator for me. :p

I think desire is the basic motivator. You have to desire something strong enough to attain, achieve, or attract it. And sometimes one has to purposely fuel that desire to make it even stronger than it is.

What motivates me is the desire for more freedom, more security, more joy, more fun, more money, more sense of accomplishment.

I find it really hard at times to get motivated and when I do it soon wears off, especially if a certain goal takes longer than expected to achieve, I guess I'm an impatient person.

Tom

Here's the trick though...Don't worry too much about the motivation...Keeping the goal in mind, and fueling it with positive feelings of one kind or another is all that is really necessary. It's a paradox, but it works. We are conditioned to think that everything must come through our own efforts, but nothing could be further from the truth. Read Excuse Me Your Life Is Waiting, by Lynn Grabhorn. You can thank me later. ;) What she's talking about in that book is what super successful people do naturally. They just don't usually attach the new-age mumbo jumbo to it. Donald Trump does it. He even talks about doing it.

Just keep focusing on what you want in life...Use your imagination to put yourself in that situation as if it were happening right now. Fuel these thoughts with positive emotions, whether they be faith, passion, excitement, etc. When you are doing the opposite, that is focusing on what you don't want and fueling it with negative emotions, try and catch yourself and stop it.

That is my ultimate success formula. It's so simple, yet so few people actually do it. We go through life focusing on all the crap that we don't like about our lives and feeling bad about it. Thus we attract more of it.

Desire seems to be the number one answer.

Do you think one can be motivated without being in possession of desire?

LOL! Well, I'm not a Buddhist Monk, but desire no longer is my number one motivator since my mother took ill.

When I was younger, I had plenty of it, but since my mother fell ill with Alzheimer's and I had to give up my career, I have very little of it left. As strange as it might sound, it is her love and my love for her that motivates me now.

Yes, I think desire is what motivates us. You didn't lose your desire. But you let it go for another desire, which is your desire to care for your mother. You are a success in your own way, because you know what you want and you are doing it.

Scarlet Warrior

OneMore,

It is very unselfish of you to give up your career to take care of your mother. When illness strikes like that, it certainly puts things into perspective.

My mother's illness has had a devastating effect on my life, one from which I am still attempting to recover. Where once I had goals oriented more towards the physical aspects of the world, I no longer do. Her illness has made me re-evaluate all that was important to me before. I am near financial ruin, but I am helpless to do anything about it because I can't, I won't, abandon my mother to an institution of trained professionals who simply don't care. They would have killed her, unintentionally so, had I not fought for her release into my custody.

My own mental health now is questionable, at best, after three years of contending with the symptoms of this disease. It has been more challenging on me than any other venture I've undertaken in my life and ranks upon the most difficult of tasks that I've ever undertaken, but, in my heart, I know it is the right thing to do and the only thing that now brings meaning into my existence.

After reading your posts about your mother, do you have someone to turn to when times are tough? Its OK taking on the burden of your mother's responsibilities and caring for her, but is there someone watching out for you as well?

My motivation is that I have come to know
why I rise in the morning. I'm in that small
percentage of people who truly know why
they are here.

It drives me to know that I could easly be in the
97% of people who spend their time: angry,
complaining, fearfull, indecisive, de-motivated,
negative, doubtfull, pesstimistic, with a victim
mindset, lack action. . .

My motivation is continue to know that my
rising each morning has purpose and what
it is: Giving thousands a voice to their dream
by being the Light with the message of
Won't Be Denied! Because What I Want Matters.

I have to remain motivated so that I remain
in the light and not fall into the hole of the 3%
who make talking overrated because they invest
even less when it comes to taking action. Life is
so much more valueable when you take time to
just listen and look.

All the many successes continue to push me and
drives because I know the successes I've made in
such a short will get to my ultimate goals in life
of being of greater value. I will continue to have
millionaires on my mastermind team. I will continue
surround myself around positive, motivating, and
encouraging mentors and coaches. I will continue
cultivate the atmosphere filled with OQP (Only
Quality People) who are about action not just talk.

Life is a beautiful thing. When I awaken knowing
I've ignited someone's life or thought, it makes all
the difference in the world. To receive emails
from others thanking me for helping along their
journey in life. WOW! No one can and will take this
away from me. As Vic Johnson said a few weeks
ago, "My dream is not too big for me."

Motivation is being it. Become motivating, live a
motivating life, believe in motivation, demand
motivation around. You have to be motivating
each day!

Have an MOTIVATING week!

Won't Be Denied!

well, back to the question.....what motivates me?

I guess the desire to reach the outcome I want. Typically there are a lot of little goals to achieve in order to reach the final result. Therefore, when I list out all those actions for the little goals, I insert a "prize" when I reach a certain level. For instance, I am addicted to accessories....handbags, shoes, boots, scarves, etc. So if there is a pair of shoes I am foaming at the mouth for, I will tell myself that I can't buy them until I complete action #2 for that goal.

Recently I had a goal to start training again with the PT but it seemed as if a lot of stuff was getting in the way and was prohibiting me to commit to that first session (really, just a bunch of excuses)....I knew that if I went to that first session I would then pick up the momentum I needed. So, I told myself that I wasn't allowed to book my airfare to my soon trip to Vegas until I had that first session with him. May seem silly to some of you but it actually motivated me to jump that initial hurdle and stop making excuses, especially since the airfare kept getting higher$.

Inserting little rewards motivates me to take action or jump a hurdle.

Tony Robbins said something that I think is pretty accurate, "most people will do more to avoid pain than to gain pleasure". I think this is true if there is a very real and tangible pain to avoid. But for most of us and with most of our goals, it seems that the real motivator is pleasure, whether it be the pleasure of buying things with the money we earn, the pleasure of having abundant energy as a result of disciplined health management, or the pleasure of being able to donate time & resources as a result of good time & money management.

Right now, in the financial area of my life, I'm motivated to find a job & learn good money management skills by the desire to avoid pain. The pain that would come from being forced to sell the house or lose it in foreclosure. The pain that would come from being embarassed and humiliated in front of my kids, friends & family. And the pain that would come from regret, which is my nemesis; regret is a tough thing to overcome.

Hi Everyone!

Being new in this forum allows me to discover that I'm not the only one seeking constant motivation. Good to be in a group of likeminded individuals.

Everyday, I've been telling me to do at least one thing to get me a tiny little step closer to my dreams. Came from a small little highly urbanised country called "The Little Red Dot" (a.k.a. Singapore), I desire to fly around the world. And when I'm back from my honeymoon at New Zealand last November, I immediately put a pic of me & my wife standing at the snowy mountain top. That's my motivation!

I strongly believe in knowing who you are (The Goal) before finding the motivations (The Strategies) to push you. One of the best motivation method I found is to surround yourself with as many motivated people as you can. That's why so many people wanted to experience the energy and passion of Anthony Robbins. For those who been to his UPW, I believe you'll agree with me how highly charged and motivated you're with him!

So everyday, I kept telling myself to "take that little step" to get closer to my dreams! :thumb:
