View Full Version : Small Change = More Profit
Coach Morse 02-13-2010, 09:06 AM Profit, profit, profit… that’s the name of the game! It’s not a game of luck. It’s a game of skill where how much you win depends on how well you play. If you want to do better you’ll need to make some changes…
Do you know what the definition of insanity is?
Insanity is: …doing the same thing over and over again, expecting to get a different result.
If you want things to be different, if you want to get different (better) results, then you simply must do things differently than you’ve been doing up to this point. For example: If you want to lose weight you need to change your eating habits and exercise. If you want to advance in your career, you need to dedicate more time to your company. If you want improved relationships, you need to improve your communication skills. And if you want to see more money (more profit) in your bank account each month, you need to get more control over the daily operation of your business.
I’m not suggesting you drastically start changing everything, merely begin to make small changes (or adjustments) to those areas where you are not getting the results you want. More often than not, getting better results is a simple matter of improving and building on the foundation you’ve already set in place. So if you feel like you’re not making the progress you think you should, if you’re not seeing the kind of profits you’d like to see, instead of getting frustrated, take a moment to examine the situation and then, - make a change…

joanne1216 02-13-2010, 08:04 PM Great post Coach. This is something that needs to be read everyday. Baby steps is what I took in 2008 and now I'm working out twice a day :thumb:

Great post!
Paul@Pittsburgh 02-14-2010, 01:59 PM If you want to advance in your career, you need to dedicate more time to your company.
I agree with the premiss of the post Coach, but this was one thing I did not fully agree with. More time is not always the answer here. Working smarter, working on what's more important, adding more value is sometimes what's needed, not working more hours which in fact can even be counter productive.
Coach Morse 02-14-2010, 05:06 PM You're right Paul. What it takes to advance in a career is not always time, but it is always "more", whether that's more time, more attention, more focus, more skill, more enthusiasm, etc...
If a person wants to get more from the company they will need to give more of something to the company.

So true........... and yet everybody in the world who hasn't run a successful business thinks they can "delegate" their way to the top. No one will care for your money as much as you do; attempts to get around that usually meet with going out of business sales.........
Good stuff, Coach!

Good stuff, Coach!
And yet the most successful companies in the world delegate nearly everything. How many of the top 100 CEO's do the accounting, budgeting, or reporting?
Coach Morse 02-15-2010, 10:21 PM And yet the most successful companies in the world delegate nearly everything. How many of the top 100 CEO's do the accounting, budgeting, or reporting?
The focus for the successful business owner is on having control over the operation, not necessarily performing each operation. For example, my accountant prepares my financial statements, keeping track of my assets and liabilities, however I decide what assets to acquire and what liabilities to incur.
So while I delegate many of the tasks needed to run my business, I do not relinquish the oversight and decision making for the business. I think what baseline was referring to (and correct me if I'm wrong base) were situations where small business owners delegate too many vital aspects of their business which cause them to lose control over the quality or their product or service thus hastening their demise.
As companies succeed and become larger it becomes more necessary to delegate operational duties as you point out Wand. I'm certain the top 100 CEO's don't do the accounting, but I can assure you they are actively involved in deciding which accounting firm is chosen to do the work, and in so doing, maintain a fair amount of control over the quality of the accounting.
Again, getting better results is all about having more control, so a business owner should, as I advise my clients, delegate the things that anyone can do, so he can spend his time and energy focused on those areas of his business that only he can do.
Wanderer 02-15-2010, 10:31 PM For the most part I would agree Coach, with some important caveats, one being if stage of the business. I think start up is imperative to have control. however later in the businesses life cycle it becomes important to pass on that control to others. Businesses also stagnate and die when owners refuse to either hire the people that can grow the business and take it to the next level even as their own energy and dedication is waning, or they do not build their business in such away that it will survive them.
The other instance is when investors buy companies. Often they do not run the company but instead use their control to put in place a management team that will guide the company to profitability and growth.
The other area I think people make the mistake of is trying to put energy into things they are not good at. If you are are not a people person, or are introverted chances are you should not be the spokesperson for your company. You need to hire someone with the skill set to do the job. Hire out your weaknesses and put your energy into your strengths.

jethrah 03-06-2010, 11:42 AM I am addicted to change..bring it on
Thanan 11-10-2011, 10:36 AM Thank you for good tip.
wadeinni 05-11-2012, 12:42 AM This is one that definitely deserves to be reiterated. I totally agree with Coach on this. Just one little change can mean the big difference between the results you've always wanted or remaining in a stagnant state of same old stuff. Someone brought this same topic up to me earlier this year during the annual new years resolution ridiculousness and I said well to begin with you have to stop the tradition of making resolutions you don't honor. It's insane people do that every year not realizing the end results are the same (No change).
My biggest change after many years has been to stop trying to do it all by myself to achieve financial success. There's nothing wrong with getting some good help from someone smarter than yourself to gain success with money, relationships, or great health.
