Awake and I decided to start our own thread of our 5k experience. Those of you who are also doing one or even a longer run, please join us. We are very excited and eager to do this :thumb:

Bought some new running shoes last night, as the ones I had had way too many miles on them. And tonight I broke them in by doing some intervals on the treadmill :yippee:. We don't start the group training til next week but I haven't run AT ALL since Oct. '08 & wanted to get a little head start. So I did 5 sets of run 30 seconds/walk 4.5 minutes. I tell ya - for the first 3 runs my legs felt like they were lead! They were unbelievably heavy and clumsy. Things were a little better for the last 2. So I've officially started running again :DC: :yippee: :dance2:

I need new running shoes too! Fleet Feet is giving us coupons for their store which is perfect because I don't buy them anywhere else.

Good for you for getting a head start. I was going to go running last night but have been under the weather. I'm not sure what's going on with me lately but I am tired of feeling crappy!!! Taz

Our training starts March 22nd but I want to get the feel of running outside sooner. Fortunately we will be springing forward this weekend and it will be lighter out longer.

So this is my training schedule. I copied what they gave us and dumped it into Excel & re-arranged it a little to make it easier to read. In the process I accidentally left off "XT" on all of the Sundays :o. (it should read ___ walk or XT).

I know that I MUST adhere to this very strictly in order to make this work. I don't want to get over-zealous and run too much too soon. Or start missing run workouts and then try to catch up. Both can lead to injury. The group runs will be on Wed & Sat and I will be able to do most of them except once I start my p/t Leasing Agent job in late April/May, I won't be able to make all of the Sat morning group runs.

Yesterday I ran 5 intervals of 40 sec. run/4 min walk (est.) and it was much easier than the first time I ran. Tomorrow I plan to run 1 min/walk 4, x 4 - in preparation for the 1.5 run intervals on Wed. I think 1.5 min. run might be a bit hard for people who have never run before in their lives - which this is really designed for - but that's not my business.

GETTING ALL PUMPED UP ABOUT THIS!!!! :yippee:

Great schedule!!! I can't wait to get mine. Our group meets on Monday evenings beginning March 22nd.

I ran the other night at the park, two miles, I didn't run the entire time as it was cold and I thought I was going to die!!!! I have to be committed to running out doors more just to get used to it. Thank God for the time change :thumb:

Quick recap of the past week. Wednesday was our first scheduled group run

Monday - It was the first official day of the program, and I was to do four 1.5 run/3 walk intervals. Beautiful, unseasonably warm spring day (in the 50s) and I couldn't wait to get home & out to do it!! :yippee: After completing my first interval a woman passed me running on the right & we said hi. Then I noticed her watch/timer beeped and she began to walk. I said something about her doing intervals, too, and she said yeah. I told her the intervals I was doing and she asked if I was part of the No Boundaries program. I said yeah, and it turns out she is one of the mentors for the group!! After we finished our run/walks we bumped into each other again and chatted for about 10 minutes. She lives in the condo building right next door to my apts! So we've informally planned to do some runs together in the future.

Wednesday - Another beautiful spring day, and we all met at Fleet Feet. A bit chaotic, as there was some paperwork and first-day wrinkles to work out but it was good. There are about 25-30 in my run/walk group. I spent most of the run/walk w/ the mentor I met the other day + a woman I just met. It was really nice.

Today - the first Saturday group run at 8:00 a.m. A cold front has moved in. It's windy, 28 degrees, w/ a wind chill of 18 degrees, and damp/drizzly. :( I swore I would do every group run unless I had a VERY GOOD reason not to, and I haven't been able to find one (believe me - I've tried!). So I've had my coffee and now I'm going to dig through all my old running stuff to find my thermal running pants & long-sleeved running shirt, and my favorite pull-over for running in the cold. I love running...I love running...I love running...

DONE! The weather wasn't so bad, as the wind wasn't an issue. And we ran through a beautiful nature conservancy on a wide gravel path and it was SO BEAUTIFUL with a little snow on all of the tree branches!! :DC: :yippee: I kind of thought you might have a hard time breathing if it was cold out, since you have asthma. My oldest son has asthma and always had problems exercising outside in the cold. That's cool that you have some friends doing it with you :thumb: Your plan is set up a bit differently than ours, as ours is based on time and not distance, even for the running group. Do you know how many are in your running group, and in the whole group?

Last night our run/walk group did 2 min walk/2.5 min run x 5. Man, did I have a hard time with this for some reason! Especially during the 4th interval, my legs felt like lead again. I thought about how hard Meredith has had to work, and push through her workouts NO MATTER WHAT, and it helped me keep pushing on. And during the walk portion of the 4th set - before starting the 5th run - the head coach came along side me on her bicycle to see how I was doing, etc. She said it's recommended to pick up the pace during the last interval!!!! I can't remember why, I was too busy thinking "there's no way I can pick up the pace - I could barely lift my legs during the last run!". :hopeless: But when my watch beeped indicating it was time to run, I was able to pick up my pace!! :yippee: Best thing is, I was so focused on running just a little bit faster, that the 2 minutes passed very quickly and I was done before I knew it! :yippee:

So that was all well & good & stuff. But I need to start x-training. I've been taking my non-running days off so my legs could rest (other than very mild walks outisde) from running. I think it's time to get back on the eliptical and stationary bike; I think doing these will make my runs a little easier.

Thanks, Meredith!

Saturday morning's run was really nice again. I'm getting to know a woman named Jennifer and her good freind, Pro (short for some long Indian name; he's a guy). She & I run at the same pace & he runs a little faster but walks w/ us. We were both feeling a bit intimidated by the plan for this week and were fighting thoughts of "I can't do that!" I actually think I helped her out a little bit by encouraging her, because I really think she is unsure if she can handle the increase in running time and reps. ALSO, I shared with her what the coach said about picking up the pace during the last/5th interval's run and told her that I was going to do it that day...just so she'd know why I suddenly moved ahead. And when the time came and I pushed forward - she decided to do it, too! We were both huffing and puffing and practically begging for mercy but were running as fast as our tired legs could take us and it was so freakin' fun!!! :yippee: When the timer finally beeped to stop running we whooped & yipee'd and high five'd each other :D :thumb: :yippee:

So tonight's run was the first of the new increase: we are now at run 2.5 min/walk 2 min x 5. That's a half minute increase in each run time, half minute decrease in each walk time, and one extra interval. It sure doesn't sound like much in writing...:o I did my run on a nice bike trail in town that's very level. For the first time ever, I didn't keep checking my timer to see if it was almost time to stop running. ;) I just focused on watching the ground (for ruts, chipmunk holes, etc.), taking in the cool spring air, keeping good form, and just relaxing. It was just hard enough to be a challenge but I didn't kill myself doing it. Beautiful night, and I feel good! :D

Joanne - how are things going with your running?

I'm doing ok. Last night it was about 45 degrees...better than last Monday. We ran one mile again and it very hard. I spoke to one of the trainers about how easily I am able to run on my treadmill and I guess the fact that there is no belt assisting me, it's completely different. Also, 45 still being rather chilly has an affect on my asthma. I need to get outdoors more and run. This week for sure!

I love Fleet Feet and how they have set this up. You sign in and out every week. They provide water and trainers. This Tuesday at the store we're going to learn how to stretch, two weeks later is a nutrition seminar.

This coming Monday is 1.5 miles. I don't know if I can do it, especially if it's cold out. It's the morning after and I'm still having a hard time breathing

Maybe you could switch to the walk/run group until your body/lungs get used to outdoor running in cooler air. Then you could get a short break to catch your breath (hopefully) before you run again. My new running buddy runs the same pace as me but she ends up breathing MUCH harder & faster than I do, and she doesn't have asthma or anything. I find myself wanting to try & help her slow down her breathing somehow, but I know that it's not necessary and certainly not my business unless she seems extremely distressed. I thought about how you must be feeling - I used to have asthma and know what asthma attacks feel like. I really hope you can get the asthma under control because I think you will enjoy this if you can.

Had a very special treat tonight: unusually warm spring day, about 72 degrees for our run, low humidity, and it's too early for muskeeterz! Tough run again, but made easier by having the group & a running buddy! :thumb:

We have really begun to count on each other to get through the tough intervals, and today was exceptionally hard. We did 6 intervals and we both agreed that if it weren't for each other being there, we may have given up and walked through parts of the run segments.

I need to do better on my cross-training days. :(

Great observation, Meredith. Someone asked my why I go to Cross Fit so often, and not just out for a run all the time. I thought about it and it is the community. Doing a workout together, pushing each other on, laughing as a group, etc., just makes all the difference in the world.

I knew nothing about the magnesium. I've been doing some research in foods high in it, I seem to be doing pretty good in that department. I know a 15lb loss would make a difference in the world but in the mean time, I have the additional weight on and I have to work with it.

I had a really good x-training workout last night (Sunday). Did 20 minutes on the treadmill, w/ much of it slow and on a steep incline. Then 1/2 hr on the elliptical w/ about 15 mintues of intervals going slow/fast, and changing the incline and switching between using no arms & then mostly arms. I figured the intervals would help simulate the running intervals.

Tonight's run was supposed to be run 3min/walk 2 min. As soon as I started running what has been a minor pain in my right ankle began to get worse, but I just kept going, figuring it just needed to loosen up. Made it through the first run. It still hurt pretty bad during the following walk but I wanted to keep going, but decided it would be best to at least turn around and run towards home, just in case it got worse. Which it did. During the 2nd run I could barely stand it and the pain started spreading; I made it through and then during the walk it was excrutiating. I tried walking for about 5 minutes, then just stopped for awhile & tried again. Since I had a fair distance to cover - plus a big hill - to get home, I called my dad to see if he could come get me & so he did.

What's weird is I've had this strange pain on the outside of my right ankle, but only to the touch. As if it were bruised or something (but there's no bruise or anything visible). It never hurt to walk or run, and didn't hurt last night during my workout. It's right where there are a lot of little bones that go over that knobby ankle bone. Now it's a bit swollen and it still hurts to walk (3.5 hrs later). So I've been icing it and if it's not better tomorrow I'll call the Dr. I am trying to be light-hearted and positive about this, because I am having so much fun running and I don't want to get off-track from the program!

mleighp1
04-06-2010, 12:13 AM
keep an eye on your ankle, I wouldn't be surprised if a bruise surfaces in a few days. Sometimes when I get hurt, something will hurt to the touch but not have a visible bruise but then a few days later, a bruise will appear. I have heard that means the bruise is really deep and it takes a few days to surface. I dont' know if that's true or not though.

I think I am going to switch to the run/walk group. This is way tougher than I ever imagined with my asthma.

I am glad you are thinking about that...or are going to do it. It will give your lungs a chance to relax & catch up before you exert yourself some more. And plus with the weather warming up it will get better, too. Just don't run too fast, either.

Well I went to the Dr. today and the good news is nothing is broken - not that I thought anything was. He said I have pulled a tendon, and need to wear an aircast for awhile to stabilize it until it heals. And I am supposed to see a sports medicine Dr. so he/she can help me get back to running ASAP, but the soonest appointment I could get is April 23rd!!! Taz I sure as heck am not going to just do NOTHING until the 23rd! I don't know what to do. Maybe I'll talk to the running coach at Fleet Feet and see if she has some ideas on what I can do to workout until it heals.

It's been six days since I strained/pulled the tendon and it is not any better. I suppose MAYBE I've not rested it enough, not really sure. I've been on my feet a lot more, w/ things being busier at work + starting my new p/t job (Leasing Agent) this past week which involves walking around the apartment complex showing units to people. It will seem ok for awhile, but at other times hurts like a beyotch.

I am beginning to realize that this 5k probably isn't going to happen for me. At least not running it. I spoke w/ a nurse on Friday at the sports medicine Dr.'s office (cuz I contacted them looking for more guidance on what to do/not do) and she wasn't a lot of help, other than to emphatically say "no pounding!", referring of course to any activities I do w/ my leg/foot. I'm guessing that once the tendon heals, it wouldn't be good to jump right back into running...:( Well - whatever will be, will be! ;)

WHen is the 5K?June 5

I should apologize for being so negative here, and assuming that I won't be able to run the 5k. I should just keep believing that I can; I'll just have to take a different route to GET there. I seriously doubt I'd be able to jump back into the walk/run group training, but I'll wait and see what the sports med Dr. has to say about things.

Yep! I think its great that you are sticking with it, even if it is not 100% running. a lot of people would have thrown in the towel with an all or nothing attitude and focused on what they cannot do rather than what the can. I love that you are going to do this and see this as the beginning. I'm proud of you.

My 5k is this coming Saturday :yippee:

I haven't officially mastered running without taking an occasional walking break but I'll tell ya, out of all my challenges in life, this has been the hardest! Running with asthma sucks!

Someone said to me "you must really love running" and that's when it dawned on me that I must to put myself through this.

Anyway, I am doing better now than I ever imagined and I will definitely look for another 5k immediately following this one :)

Right on Jojo!
You're awesome and made some serious growth here.

Something that keeps me going when it isn't all going right is this. You earned the right to run. When someone tells you you must love running tell them "Hell Ya, and I earned the right to run". When I overcome an injury and I am out on one of those tough runs that all you want to do is go home, I tell myself that I fought through injuries just to be here, right now, doing what I am doing and that it is my right to be here. It is an attitude shift that gives me an extra oompf!

And if you need to stop and take a walk break in the middle of a run, well, you earned that too. Your doing this for you. Own it big time!

Great post, Scooter.

Great job Joanne. Running can be fun, tough, uplifting and humbling. Never thought about it as earning the right to run, but I agree totally with Scooter. You have put in the miles, time, sweat and tears. Good luck on Saturday!

WOO HOO!!! You go, girl!!! :headbang2:
It is so totally cool to read this, especially since you had to push through so much to reach this point. I know you had a real hard time with the asthma and running outside in the spring when the air was cool. Not something you can just brush off lightly or ignore.

My 5k was this past Saturday and of course I couldn't participate in it. I just finished my physical therapy 2 weeks ago and began wearing normal shoes (vs running shoes) at that time also. The proneal tendon injury healed awhile ago but in curing that, the ankle in general was negatively affected and still hurts. But I'm walking regularly and am planning to join the fall No Boundaries group & do a 5k then! :thumb:

Scooter, I owned it big time this morning, I had a wonderful 3.6 mile run!

Awake, I know you and I know you will be right back on track as soon as you're able. We can still do it together as I plan on doing the summer and fall 5k.

Look at you go!
Make sure you take a few days off before your race. Give yourself time to rest up. Maybe do a few slow 1-2 miles or so but don't show up tired. This is your big day. Heck, you already beat a 5K!

Are you saying I shouldn't run the morning before the race? If I run the track once around it's 1.8 miles, is that ok? I can't imagine not running.

As for running slow, I'm always slow :o

It really depends on your body. Usually when a runner is preparing for a long race they have a taper period where they allow all resources to build up and the body to heal. In shorter races like a 5K it isn't really that critical unless you were shooting for some kind of personal best and since this is your first race, anything is a personal record (PR) and it is actually good to run a mile or two just so the muscles stay functional and flexible.

If you body is good running a day before the race then heck ya, do it.
I am so excited :yippee::DC: :yippee:to hear you have the running bug
It is really awesome!

There are probably 200 million people in the country or more that you could totally smoke in a 5K race You are truly in the top 90% now and getting more rare and unique

I definitely have the running bug and love every moment of it but it's funny, as I'm running and feeling aches and pains in parts of my body that I didn't even know existed, I question myself as to why I'm doing this.... then when I'm done running, I can't wait to do it again. Outdoors definitely beats my treadmill!!!!

That's EXACTLY how I feel!!! Except there's a point in the middle where those aches & pains subside and I'm just running on auto-pilot and feeling good...it's been awhile since I've felt that, though!

Thank you :)

I'm sitting here drinking my coffee, my cats woke me up earlier than expected because there was a cat on my porch looking in...God Forbid. I swear my cat sounded like she was possessed the way she was carrying on.

So, in two hours I'm leaving for my run. The medium team shirts never arrived which happens to be one of mine. They're hoping they'll arrive this morning.

We have to arrive at 8, take team photos, do God knows whatever and then the run begins at 10. My only concern is having to pee before the race which means I will have to use those johnny on the spot nasty things which makes me sick to my stomach. I would prefer to just drive home!! So other than that being my only concern, I am pretty excited. Do I wear lipstick for the photo?? ;)

And w/ the potty thing...just focus on something else and use their facility. Whatever you do, DON'T decide to "just hold it" for the race - you will regret it!!! Actually, I just realized that as I'm typing this you're already gone - so NEVER MIND MY WHOLE POST!!!

Well, it's too late for my first 5k, as I've already done three or four 5ks and one 10k, but this all started because I decided to begin training for my first 5k since Nov. 2006. I joined the Fleet Feet No Boundaries group and then Joanne got excited about that and decided to do the same thing in Buffalo...and the rest is history!!! I am going to do a 5k in the fall w/ the No Boundaries group :thumb:

Joanne - I'm dying to hear how it went!! Did you love it? Hate it? Do you have a picture of you crossing the finish line? What was your time? (not that it matters) Details, woman - DETAILS!!! :D

You've done a 10k??? Maybe that will be my goal for 2011.

The run was awesome. It was so good that I had a such a feeling of sadness when it was over. I did very well... took four 1 minute walking breaks. It wasn't even my asthma this time, something was up with my left leg, it was going numb on me, wtf?? That was new!!

There is a photo of me finishing, the owner of Fleet Feet was taking them so hopefully they email them or contact us about getting them.

Anyway, it was quite the experience running in my neighborhood with the streets closed down. People were providing water, some were cheering, there was a even a band outside one of my favorite places to go, Spot Coffee. It was great and I wish I could do it every weekend. :)

YUP - and I came in dead last!!! (see pic...1 hr, 17 min +). But my goal was to RUN the whole thing w/out any walk breaks, and I accomplished that goal! That was Oct. 2006. I think a 10k is a great goal for you for 2011 - it is definitely a challenge!
