Sincerely, MD :) Stoic_Jason 06-30-2010, 11:47 AM Hey MD. Welcome to SV. What kind of government assistance did you qualify for? What is it about this that makes you think it will change your life for the better? What are you doing about your depression? What would it take to have the procedure(s) performed in another country? Corinne Friesen 06-30-2010, 12:59 PM Are there websites where other people with this problem gather, share support, help each other find the resources they need? I guarantee you, you are not alone in this quandry. If there isn't a website of this nature, can you start one? Help yourself by helping others. MsMed11 06-30-2010, 07:29 PM Thanks for reading and the replies, nice of you. Well I have qualified for government medicaid since I receiving disability benefits for my depression. the biggest change I feel it will bring is that will provide me with me a sense of congruity between mind and body. I know who I have always been and I suffered for most of my life with a body that did my identity as I've always known it. I would imagine it would be a concept that someone who is comfortable in their skin and more importantly their gender could wrap their mind around. And now that I live my life as my true self there is an added sense of vulnerability and fear that comes with not having completely transition from my former male life. Ideally It would do so much for my peace of mind to be able to roll out of bed and not think twice about what is between my legs. Or have the sickening feeling right before I leave home that my face looks masculine and I will surely get stares. I would love to know what it would be like to go to a beach and wear a bathing suit. To go into a public bathroom without hesitation. To have most of the normalcies most women dont think twice about. That's how it would change my life. MD MsMed11 06-30-2010, 07:44 PM well I weighed my options and came to the conclusion that the main benefit of having surgery abroad is price. The quality of care in a country like thailand for instance is excellent and at a fraction of the price both surgeries would cost here. Caria 09-02-2010, 08:27 AM It is amazing story, let me know how to help with funds, i am in South Africa. mleighp1 09-03-2010, 11:17 AM Have you considered writing a book, a blog, or making a documentary about your gender identity issues in order to make money? What about contacting television talk shows or better yet, 20/20, 60 minutes, etc. to reach a wider audience and encourage more people to donate money for your gender reassignment surgery? What about asking the local GLBTQI-friendly businesses if you can set a fund-raising jar on their counter. Or even better, ask if they will allow you to use their facilities for a fund-raiser and try to get as many GLBTQI businesses to donate items for a silent auction. I think this is one of the best avenues for bringing in large amounts of money. You would probably need to do this in several communities around the country to make enough money. You could pick university towns, speak at the university about your issue and use the opportunity to plug your event. Most universtites have a GLBTQI organization that would be a good contact to get the ball rolling. You would need to coordinate between them and the local gay bar to organize the fund-raising event. Create fliers and have the GLBTQI people hand them out. Contact other organizations on campus to invite them to speaking event. (Women's studies, department of social work, etc. ) Generate as much media attention as possible to attract people to your fund raisers. Be prepared for some opposition but keep your focus on the money you will generate. Consider having some sort of inexpensive merchandise (possibly donated) that you can sell for a profit at your speaking events in case people cannot attend the fund-raising auction or party. Or maybe combine the two events into one. I'm just brainstorming here and haven't thought it all out, but now that I'm typing..I'm thinking maybe just simplify it into one speaking event/fundraiser (but I don't think campuses allow you to have a fundraiser on their campus so then again, maybe do two events). anyway, start contacting people to find out the rules and guidelines about this kind of stuff and network, network, network! and remember, people like people who are passionate about their causes. Work on your explanation as to how this would improve your life. I don't feel emotionally drawn into your story as much I could be. I think you have a lot of potential to make the money and generate attention and sympathy, but I do think it will come more from in person speaking events and fund-raisers. People have a hard time parting with money to a stranger on the internet but feel more connected to someone they met in person myzt1qu3 09-26-2010, 04:59 PM i hope the best for you and i hope that you will be able to find your happiness. may i please post your site on my facebook page so that the story will travel through the internet? Scooter 09-26-2010, 11:47 PM You are all invested in this, I'll let you make the call but posting a link is a rules violation. PM Me and give me your thoughts otherwise the link will be gone. mleighp1 09-27-2010, 01:12 PM I don't think it matters. This person never came back after posting. tigerbunny 09-28-2010, 02:04 AM I don't think it matters. This person never came back after posting. Except that new folks drop in and see a rules violation. Looks like it's fixed. :) You did have a lovely, thoughtful reply to the OP, Mer. I love how you do that.
