Cool, I fit some of the criteria. Good thing I am not done yet.

I've never met a billionaire. So, not knowing me is also something they all have in common.

Your kidding, right?
If they met you I am sure they would be charmed.
You have met, to my limited knowledge, some pretty amazing people.
One Mt. Climber comes to mind and it is not me.

It's a interesting article - or I should say interestingly written. They seem to imply that dropping out of college is a way to billionairedom --

Want to become a billionaire? Up your chances by dropping out of college...

...yet also say that

Forget everything your guidance counselor told you: You don't have to go to college to be successful. More than 20% of the self-made American moguls on the most recent list of the World's Billionaires never finished college. Many of them made their fortunes in tech. Among them: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Larry Ellison, (Oracle) and Theodore Waitt (Gateway).

But doesn't that mean that 80% of them DID finish college?

Could mean that, statistics have a way of telling the story in favor of the story teller.

I once read a study and article that evaluated the wage of successful college grads to the wages of successful non grads. There was no significant difference. What hit me about the study was they measured success against success not number of successful in each group so once again the study seemed targeted to towards the story teller.

I can tell you that in my world, the educated vs. the non-educated hands down leans towards non-educated but then that is in my world and it is a strange world.

Software development is a different world that business management or finance. I cannot imagine a successful bean counter without a degree but I can imagine a massively successful software engineer without a degree. Why, what they teach in most universities is outdated garbage and only the fundamentals that most computer aficionados pick up in their teens.

Also, Software is less science and more art and art is not something that is easily taught. Sure technical aspect are taught but not the art component. Oftentimes I look at my many successful business building friends and I realize that although some have educations, very little of their success could be directly attributed to their education. When they need expertise, they hire workers and those workers typically have degrees and make a menial wage.

BTW, my reference to education is directed at formal education not life or on the job experience education which I value very highly.

Default From a 2nd round entrepreneur....

Very interesting article. I never finished college and always had better paying jobs then those I knew who did finish...my husband and I sold a business last year and are 9 months into our second. I guess it all depends upon what you want to accomplish in life...if you want to be a nurse or doctor, then college it is...as an entrepreneur, it seems to be more about persistence and the ability to dive in with both feet...being willing to do whatever it takes and to figure out a way to accomplish the impossible. A crazy life, but a great one!
